A couple of 1/72 Hornets

Recommended Posts

#25 Academy 1/72 F/A-18 C, Swiss AF J-5023, decals came from spares.

This was my very first Academy Hornet. Built originally as a VFA-192 NF305, as soon as I managed to get my hands on one. During renovation I cut the flaps and drooped them, stripped the paint and applied a new one. This time I chose the Swiss AF markings, which I believe came from an Italeri Hornet. At some point I'm going to have to do one more of these Swiss jets.

Don't really know what I did with the missing gear doors. Nor do I know anything about a searchlight that supposedly should be on the side of the aircraft.

For the first time in a legacy Hornet I did not use plasticard for the part that goes between the flap and wing. I still don't know what its called.

#26 Hasegawa F/A-18 E, VFA-31 AJ200, 2009, TwoBobs decals.

This was actually my very first E and my third Super Hornet, done quite some time ago, I believe in 2008. It even wore exactly the same markings for a VFA-31 CAG! However, back then my model did not have the Bard Stack ECS exhaust. Lucklilly some time earlier I've dissassembled an Revell Super Hornet that kindly donated these parts to this build. I've stripped the paint, drooped the flaps, filled the gaps and remade this one into what You see. Oh... and I've added a pilot from Airfix Su-27 with JHMCS made out of... plasticine

There's no LMav on this one, but I really like it ;)

DSCN3397.JPG

DSCN3399.JPG

I've tore some decals on the spine while dusting this one off. Guess I'll have to repair the damage.

DSCN3400.JPG

Actually this model is the reason I bought the Italeri Carrier Deck Section that You can see in the photos.

#27 Hasegawa F/A-18 E, VFA-115 NK200, 2001, Hasegawa decals.

This one was actually my fourth Super Hornet, done in the very same markings. I've reassembled it in june 2013, this time with a loadout that I've seen on one of my reference pics. I just used Mk82 SE ince that was what I've had at the time.

I've tired to take a pic of the way I do the thermal coating, but unfortunatly my camera could not focus enough.

#28 Hasegawa F/A-18 A, VFA-203 AF313, 1992, Superscale decals

Not really the scheme I've always wanted, but once I got these decals I just could not resist! Done in september 2013.

I guess You just have to believe me when I say that it has some decals on.

Sadly, theres not much to write about this one. Done in parallel with previous one, finished couple days later in october 2013. I've used Aires resin pit for this one.

#30 Hasegawa F/A-18 B, VFA-125 NJ402, 2009, TwoBobs decals.

This one is one of my favourite :) I did not have what to do with an Hasegawa double seater, so I figured I'll build it as a camouflaged trainer. Came out pretty nice to my eye. I've replaced kit seats with ones from Aires cockpits. I normally use Quickboost seats, since they have molded on seat belts.

#31 Hasegawa EA-18 G, VAQ-129 White 55, 2011, TwoBobs decals.

I really wanted this scheme on my shelf. It's just awesome! I've had to replace national insignia on the fuselage and wings, since the ones supplied with the sheet were slightly too big. Nothing really majur to report here.

#32 Hasegawa F/A-18 C, VFA-195 NF400, 1995, Hasegawa Chippy Ho! history decals.

Built in november 2013. Another one of my rebuilds. Previously it was built as a VMFA-232 Co's jet from Hasegawa basic boxing. As it often happpens I did not like this scheme before I've actually built it. Again I've folded wings on a done model. I hope I won't change my mind in some 7 or 8 years and start to unfold those wings again... This was my very first model with an Aires cockpit. I was so happy with the fit I bought few additional cockpits for both the F/A-18's and F-14's. The latter ones don't fit. Not even in Tomcat kits.

DSCN3280.JPG

Now that I look at this model I really like these markings.

#33 Hasegawa F/A-18 C, VMFA-232 WT01, 1999, Hasegawa decals.

This is another rebuild. Originally it was VFA-192 CAG from 2001. I've dropped the flaps, since I figured USMC birds would not fold the wingtips while not on a boat, added a pilot, changed loadout. During decal placement I realised I don't have enough markings in proper color to fully decal this bird. Ever since it just sits in my closet and awaits for me to buy a new Hasegawa white box F/A-18 C.

#34 Hasegawa F/A-18 D, VMFA(aw)-224 WK501, 1997, HDL decals.

Now this is a good story. This model is my very first Hasegawa F/A-18 D EVER! I first built it sometime in 2006 using kit supplied decals for VMFA(aw)-224 BM501 boss bird, the one with tiger striped rudders that's included in Hasegawa white box F/A-18 D. Some time later, I rebuilt it as a VMFA(aw)-224 WK501 using an old sheet of Hi Decal decals. After rather long while I rebuilt it once more, this time in-flight to the state that it is now in. Damn... I really like these markings... hmm... four times the charm?

DSCN3288.JPG

I've used aft IP and IP coaming from a Academy F/A-18 D, along with some seats from Hasegawa Super Hornets.

#35 Hasegawa 1/72 F/A-18 F, VFA-122 NJ100, 2011, Syhart Decals.

I was scared sh**less of this one. I've painted it with my usual Pactra 36375 with additional white for contrast, but it was too dark!!! I've sprayed it once more with 36375 with even more white in it and it worked. Model looked almost white though. I've decaled this beast for at least 3 days and I must say DAMN! Syhart decals were awesome to work with, and their placement instruction was even awesomer! ;) seriously without detailed placement instruction I would be lost. I've added excellent RES-IM Bard Stack ECS Exhaust, Wolfpack seats, Intake and Exhaust covers made with kitchen aluminium foil, and Steel Scorpion RBF tags. This one has the most WOW factor of all my models.

#36 Revell F/A-18 E, VFA-81 AA201, 2010, Authentic Decals.

Not much story behind this one. I really wanted to build some Super Hornets in flight, and I figured my two Revell E's would be nice. I chose markings and voila! In march 2014 I've built wingman.

#37 Academy F/A-18 A, VFA-132 AK203, 1986, Aeromaster Decals.

This is somewhat sad story. I built this one some time ago and wanted to rebuild it. Unfortunatly, a box containing part of my modeling stash fell on this one and few others crushing 4 Hornets that were to be rebuilt in the near future. The other 3 I was unable to salvage, but I managed to save this one. It was hard, since the model was twisted and a little squished but I've managed. Just don't look too closely. I chose this as my weathering testbed. Guess it could have come out worse ;)

#38 Hasegawa 1/72 F/A-18 E, VFA-137 NE200, 2009, Revell Decals.

I guess the "flaming butt cheeks" scheme sort of grew on me. With 3 Revell Super Hornets decal sheets laying around I just couldn't say no to it ;) I've cut off the white stripes from Revell decals and applied them to this kit. The tail artwork needed some trimming, but nothing major.

DSCN3427.JPG

I've also added some minor detail to the turtle deck behind the ejection seat.

This is currently my last rebuild. It was actually my second Super Hornet that I built. During rebuild I've modified the aft IP coaming to represent ACS.

This is how it looked some time ago before I've decided to rebuild it:
