USMC LAV/Tank Crew Uniforms. 1990's.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am working on a 1/35 USMC LAV-25 "Piranha" as used during "Desert Storm". The kit is the Trumpeter "Piranha" and it does not come with a crew. Verlinden makes a "Desert Storm" U.S. Tank crew and I was wondering if USMC LAV crews wore the same gear (within reason obviously) as their U.S. Army brethren?

Thanks all!

Don

Yes, USMC crewmen wore basically the same uniforms as US Army crewmen. This set would be fine. Another option would be crewmen in NOMEX CVC uniforms, like below.

Even though they are listed as modern and in A'stan, the uniforms and gear were still used in ODS as well.

Yes you should be good on that one, unless someone that was even closer to the 0313s at that time says otherwise. it looks like Green coveralls were also worn just FYI:

How fun does that look...

I was really curious to see if Marines had desert camo PASGT armor (the guy shouting in the verlinden set has it on the other two don't) I thought the Marines have had it only in woodland but its looks like the desert camo was actually common,

Long Story short? If you want to make them like Marines you have to go through a massive amount of conversion to add pounds of scale muscle and cigars- Just kidding! You could paint them just like how they are on the verlinden box and be accurate.

Thanks guys!

TT...freakin' awesome pics  ! I am doing a USMC LAV-25 in the three color camo as seen in "Desert Shield" and early "Desert Storm". The Trump kit is good (better then the ESCI/Italeri/Revell), but comes with no stowage, no crew, no MG or MG mount and no coaxial MG (just a hole). So...there's been some scrounging for parts. But the crew is key to my setting.

I appreciate the help. Verlinden it is...with added cigars  .

Trumpeter did create an add on set the kit.

It didn't fix the decals.

Yeah, I saw that after I had already picked up some odds and ends. I also scrounged from the spares bin. Sadly, Trumpeter should have included the Coax, MG/MG mount, wire cutters, and at least a bit of stowage (although I can overlook the stowage). But not including the Coax, and MG/MG mount was a huge mistake in my opinion. The decals...yeah what a shambles! The box art doesn't match anything actually included in the box decal wise, the white "UN" LAV-25 is a bit of a mystery as well. Again, I love the kit. Without a doubt the best "Piranha" in 1/35 is the Trumpeter kit. Its a good kit that could have been great with just a little more.

I don't disagree that it is all kinds of wrong not to include those details.

As for the UN markings. They probably confused it with the Canadians. http://www.journal.forces.gc.ca/vo8/no2/army-armee-eng.asp

Yeah, the "Coyote" is a close cousin to the "Piranha" and definitely shares the LAV family lines. I can see Trumpeter making that mistake.
