Jennings
1. Yes 2. Yes 3. It depends on the date and the specific airplane. When "Sky" was ordered, there was no sample and no real description given. During 1940 there were Spits with light blue undersides, very light blue-grey undersides, greenish ("Duck Egg Green") undersides, and all manner of home-brewed mixes. It wasn't until a good deal later that the AirMin finally got around to issuing a specification for what became known as Sky Type S. In 99.9999% of cases it's impossible to say for sure what color a given airplane had at a given time, since only b&w photos exist.
Edgar
Unfortunately, that's too simplistic; Sky started life as a pre-war invention of Sidney Cotton, who christened it "Camotint." When he was booted out by the authorities, they took over his colour (which was already in use on his P.R. Blenheims and Spitfires) and renamed it Sky (type "S".) Type "S" = smooth, but still matt (which it wasn't, being really quite glossy, but, for an underside colour, this didn't matter so much.) Shortage of paint (Cotton had only registered his paint with one manufacturer) caused problems at the start of the Battle of Britain, resulting in some of the weird and wonderful schemes used by some Squadrons. There were a few Mk.II Spitfires, during 1940, which should/would have had Sky undersides, plus roundels from mid-August. In December 1940, the port wing was ordered to be painted black, and this lasted until 22-4-41, when they reverted to all-Sky (should have been 10 days earlier, but, again, there was a shortage of Sky, so it was delayed.) F4DPhantomII
Thanks guys.I know Revell like to make up mixes of paints for the colors but I would rather use the colors intended if they are available.I am not big on mixes.
