rustywelder
The family and I took a trip out to the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover AFB today. Quite a nice museum, and well worth the trip if you are in the area. Its about a 2 hour drive give or take a bit from the Baltimore/DC area. The museum has in its collection a couple of planes you are unlikely to see any where else, and is located adjacent to Dover's main runway. Here are some pics from today, including some(not great) of a C-17 doing touch and go's. rustywelder
The real star at the museum for me was the C-

rustywelder
Glad you fellas enjoyed! I forgot to mention that many of the planes are open to walk through weather permitting. I was able to climb in the -141B, the VC-9, the -130 that I forgot to take a picture of, and the C-5 where Santa was hanging out. The rest, including the C-133 are open for guided tours on certain days.
Ishthe47guy
What does it take to get onto a active military base nowadays if you are a civilian?
11bee
What does it take to get onto a active military base nowadays if you are a civilian? My question as well. Had no idea this place existed, I get down in that neck of the woods periodically, If I can get into the museum, I will definitely make the trip. I especially like the fact that you can get "up close and personal" with the aircraft instead of being fenced off from them. Thanks very much for posting the pics! rustywelder
What does it take to get onto a active military base nowadays if you are a civilian? The museum is outside of the wire right now. It will be inside the wire with it's own dedicated gate for civies at some point. So you needn't worry about any special requirements for the AMC museum. To answer the main question, IIRC when the armor museum was still at Aberdeen, you needed to give an ID for everyone in your party, along with proof of insurance and your vehicle's registration at the main gate. You would then be issued a pass to visit the museum. I'm sure this changes from base to base depending on wether a civie has any reason to be there or not.
Moose135
Very nice! I've tried to visit a couple of times when traveling back and forth to New York, and it seems I always go by on Mondays, when they are closed. One of these days...
ikar
It's good to see a 106 in the markings of the 95th F.I.S. They were based there for a short time while I was there before they were pulled out. I always liked their markings. As I looked at your pictures I was trying to figure out exactly where they put the museum. As you look at the base from the highway, it used to be that on the far left was the parking area for the C-141s and next to them sat the C-5s. Then the transit ramp and base ops/control tower. On the far right was the alert building for the 95th and I think one hanger. We eventually took over their alert facility and turned it into a armory for our aircraft security section. So, exactly where did they put this museum? I remember that to the left of the base, at the end of the runway was a line of tall trees with farm land beyond it. I can't remember what was to the right of the 95th area because I never paid much attention to it, but I think it was just open fields.

Chorse6
Great museum and collection! Visited there when I was TDY to Dover about 10 years ago. Well worth a little side trip.
Kurt H.
If you make a trip to the AMC museum, try to get there on an open aircraft day, it is usually the 3rd saturday of the month, except for the winter months. When I visited, it was an open aircraft day, I got to go inside a c-141 c-1119, c-130, the kc-97, the C-5, and the C-133. The C-133 was my favorite. The events page on the website for the museum has the info: http://amcmuseum.org/events/ Edited December 22, 2014 by Kurt H.
