1/96 scale Tractor Crawler in paper

Recommended Posts

I thought I post a couple of photos of a 1/96 scale paper kit I have of the Tractor Crawler that a friend in Japan has produced. The detail is excellent and I plan on up scaling now to 72 scale in laser cut plastic.

I Hope you like it.

Wow, this is epic, lots of detail in this one! My 1/144 crawler has all that detail internal also. I wish I had the time & space for something that big. I'm in Darwin :coolio:/> , but used to live in Sydney. It's way to hot to have paper model here, they would just warp, plus I have noticed some of my white is turning yellowish :(/>

So you say it's 1/96 and from a guy in Japan. Has he made more? Or just a one off? Anyhow it should look great once it's complete. Or are you going to make it all in 1/72?

Are you tryin' to tell us that this ... is Paper? The structure, the trucks, the treads ... are ... are Paper?

Even if it's been kitted into styrene, this is phenomenal! Now, I've got the paper Crawler in 1/72, but can't see how it'll be at all sturdy and had/have plans to build it in styrene.

You two Aussies are gonna fit right in here!:woot.gif:

Thanx alot guys!!

Pete

Mick, he produces the plans in a PDF book format with instructions on how to assemble. You print the page out onto the correct cardboard weight and start cutting. The instructions are very complicated and are in Japanese only hence why he does not sell the kit. I can read Japanese so he was kind enough to give me this and the LUT in 1/96 scale also. Check the following out: This is all paper/cardboard in 1/96 scale as is the Saturn V.

The photos below are of his work.

Pete, yes it's all paper. You start with the instructions in PDF format which you print out and then glue onto the correct weight red paper which is really thin cardboard. Start cutting and eventually you end up with what's in the photos. The only plastic he uses is thin round rod etc to shape the paper. Some of the hoses on the swing arms etc are plastic. If you look closely you can see a white edge on some of the red sections which is the edge of the paper where he has forgotten to color with red ink.

His work and design is really great. The book is about 200 pages of plans and assembly notes plus a CD with many sheets of plans in A4 PDF format.

I'm scaling the Crawler up to 72 scale and will laser cut the parts to ease assembly as I do not paper that much.

Cheers,

Gene

All cardboard and paper???!!! I can see beautiful curved shapes too. This is all beyond me. You, sir, are crazy to the max. An LLRV would probably be a walk in the park for you. Just a question -- paper cannot be sanded and is influenced by humidity -- how do you deal with those?

Edit: Just as usual I replied straight away without reading, heheh. I thought it was your work, but just the same I wouldn't have the heart to foray into such a project. And, man, you are blessed you read Japanese -- how did you learn it?

Hey Guys,

Here is another fantastic Crawler model of paper by Mischa Klement (Cyana) , a gifted 3D designer and Model freak.

His Crawler model kit (1/96) is available since August 2010. More than 11.000 parts makes it the most comprehensive paper model in the world.

After finishing the Crawler kit he's working on his next spectacular project, a 1/96 paper model kit of LUT 1, which is prepared for a number of parts beyond 20.000. The 3D design is finished for about 70%, and hopefully will be completed by the end of the year. :woot.gif:

Gene, who is doing your laser cutting? I imagine cutting those shapes in 1/72 could be pretty expensive, unless you got the hookup...

A local company here in Aus. They use very high pressure water to cut with a very fine nozzle. It's better than laser as it uses no heat and you get a perfect straight edge. Yes I'm hooked up so to speak. I do design work for them.

Cheers,

Gene

Good Lord, that is awesome. I would love to have this in 1/72. Heck, I'll sell half of my stash if need be. Let's hope someday someone will produce these wonderful Real Space Models to go with my Shuttle. I can hope :rolleyes:/>

Hi Guys. A little update. I have been very busy scaling the crawler up in 1/72 scale in CAD so the parts can be laser cut where possible. Not much to show for now only CAD drawings. Next month I hope to send the first of the files out to the laser specialists and have some of them cut. I'm working as fast as I can as I need one in 72 scale for the LVM LUT that I placed an order for.
