Recommended Posts

We will do Egypt marking and if i'll find photos of Vietnamese Chaika - this marking too.

Great news! Got a soft spot after watching the Egyptian armed forces in action for seven months.

I am not normally a 1/72nd aircraft builder with the exception of the multi-engined models. This Be-12 would foot that bill. It sure is an interesting beast. It looks so ungainly and a bit ugly. But with that said it also looks quite beautiful. Hmmm, maybe what they say is true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Looking forward to the decals and I should go get the kit so I all ready when the sheets are released.

Ahhh it's working!!! :yahoo: We will have you over to the Dark Side soon!!??

Yes I have one of these monsters 'flying' over to me! Just trying to figure out what scheme to use, yes, shouldn't be hard as there aren't too many??

Your color scheme choices for the Be-12 are:

1. Overall grey

2. Overall grey

3. An overall slightly different shade of grey

Some have tried to say Vietnam used an overall grey with wide green stripes, but to my knowledge no photo of such a thing exists.

So, are you trying to say that 50 Shades of Grey would be a good reference book?

That bird with the blue belly looks interesting!?

The blue belly is pretty unusual (and downright ugly). That's a very recent thing. In the Soviet days they were overall grey. Interestingly, I've discovered a very common thing on Be-12s that I can't figure out.

*Many* Be-12s have a lighter colored "L" shaped patch painted (often roughly, sometimes neatly), but not always exactly the same size/shape forward of the left gear well. I've never seen it on the right side in a single photo. But it's *very* common on the left side...

Anybody have any ideas on why? I thought it looked like corrosion control, but why always in the same place, and why never on the other side?

Hmm could be something attached to the inside that was not accounted well for in the design and this is a reinforcing patch? Or, they added a piece of gear that needed better support and it had to be riveted to the skin or a couple of extra ribs were also added??????? But it is another shade of grey....

I'm pretty sure it's paint, rather than a physical patch. There's no indication of it being a doubler plate, or if it were, why it would be only roughly the same size/shape on different airplanes. On some of them it's not even straight edged. I'm pretty certain it's just paint.

Sort of opposite the way it works on the PBY-5A.

The Be-12 is just so ungainly looking, while at the same time having a certain grace. I've loved it since I first got a copy of the little pocket sized book "Bombers In Service" in about 1971.

I just had to try and see for myself - it actually does look pretty good.

Yes, it does. Any chance you could do one up in the scheme that the Canadian CSR-110 Albatross wore?

Cheers,

Tom

I received my kit today. I have a couple more on the way from Ukraine.

What a nice kit! Definitely excellent value for the money - comes with a small PE fret, rubber wheels and even canopy masks. Surface detailing is pretty clean and restrained. There are no location pins on the mating surfaces, but overall it looks like a very good kit.

Looks good! Definitely value for money.

At 30* bucks (unless one like to pay inflated price to HobbyTerra...) it is a steal.

*It is 30 for me here. One needs to be logged in to see the 30USD price and i think one need to have bought something from them before in order to have 30USD price instead of 47. Otherwise it is 38 here.

In response to my question to someone in the industry in Ukraine about the relationship between Amodel and Modelsvit:

“They are closely related. One owner. But there are nuances.”

Always wondered...
