A T-59 crashed at MCAS Yuma today. It hit a truck that was on the runway. Not sure if the tower had cleared the truck to be on the runway or not. I'm sure the investigation will reveal that. Sadily the Marine that was in the truck was killed. Such a tragedy.

I noticed on the T-59 it looks like a South Korean emblem. Does anyone know what this might be for. The article I read said it was a civilian aircraft.

(AP) "FAA records show the aircraft that crashed is owned by a Nevada company called Air USA.

According to the company's website, it provides contract services to the U.S. military and defense contractors."

I was trying to post this earlier but my phone wasn't cooperating with me. From what I heard the T-59 came in to land as normal and suddenly lost power. The pilot tried to throttle up but never gained control of the aircraft.

The plane hit the runway sideways on the port side and sheared the wing off. The plane slid about 600 feet before coming to rest.

The wing that got separated from the plane smashed into a truck parked across the runway at the hold short line. The truck was actually facing away from the crash when it happened.

I think I know the Marine who was killed. The vehicle was from base ops.that being said it was a tragic day and my heart and prayers go out to his loved ones he leaves behind.

Semper Fi Marine you will not be forgotten.

It was an ex-South Korean AF Hawk. The fire probably burnt away some of the paint revealing the South Korean AF emblem.

RIP Marine

Sounds like the Marine truck was at the hold short line on the taxi-way (not runway). Which would reveal that this was just an unfortunate accident when the pilot lost control of his aircraft.

Sorry for the loss of your fellow Marine.

Good grief. My sympathies as well to the families of those affected.

Been a rough few months for these companies that provide contracted air services. Doesn't bode well for the future of these kinds of operations.

Vey sad.

RIP.

What a freak accident. These jobs aren't as safe as we sometimes believe.

I was doing a FOD walk on one of the long runways one foggy morning when a civilian Beech twin poked through the fog a mere 150ft in front of us. We scattered wondering who the f dropped the ball on that one.

Calling in the blind I would imagine. Always risky. WTI is such a busy time at Yuma and will always be. It's been almost 15 years since the V-22 crash that killed 17 or so. I just hope the family of the Marine are ok, I know the Corps provides support for them but you can never replace a life :(

Oh, that's bad.

Irrelevant side-issue: does anyone know why this Hawk is called a T-59? South Korea's Hawks were the Mk.67 and I thought the US series had only reached T-53. Was it the operator's own designation?

http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/story/military/2015/03/25/marine-killed-by-plane-crash-was-escort-to-construction-crew/70434050/

YUMA, Ariz. — Investigators say a Marine who was killed when a civilian plane struck his government truck was escort to a construction crew working near a runway at an Arizona military base when the accident occurred.

A National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report into the plane's March 11 crash at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma said the Marine was in a truck approximately 140 feet from the edge of the runway.

The Marine Corps previously identified the Marine as 23-year-old Lance Cpl. Anthony T. DuBeau, a Kenosha, Wisconsin, native.

The NTSB said the plane banked to the side during takeoff before its right wing struck the truck. The plane then crashed nearby. Its pilot and a passenger were not injured.
