Wessex Royal Navy rescue

Recommended Posts

My modelling project will be a Wessex helicopter from Royal Navy (UK), Culdrose.

I take the Italeri kit and meanwhile got some AM goodies from Eduard and Royal Resin. Probably I will do a tailfold and rotorblades folded. But not decided yet.

Meanwhile I started with the interior. Process is still slow as I m to finish the F-5E and there's also the Tamiya F-16 NTM on the workbench.

For interior I take the colored Eduard Zoom set. The seats for the passengers already painted due to Italeri instruction (grey). But meanwhile I have doubts...I have seen in other builds (on britmodeller) they made them dark blue.

Any suggestions or pics for me?

Still can change it, the Edu seatbelts are not glued yet.

Meanwhile I got the second Wessex kit from Italeri, the HAS.1 version. So I decided to do a double build again (again because I ended in a double build in the bad boys GB last year).

For the HAS.1 Italeri reworked the moulds a bit and you can see that when you compare some pieces that the HU.5 and HAS.1 have in common. E.g. now they worked on the backsides to avoid visible sinkmarks, other parts are molded thinner. BUT - uhh ohh Italeri guys, where have you been? dolce fa niente!??? - why you forgot to add seats to the HAS.1?? The HU.5 have it alredy...let's see what I will do. I tend to close the cargo door!

OK. My plan so far: the HAS.1 will get the folded Rotorblades AND the tail fold set that arrived from Hannants (UK) a few days ago. While the HU.5 will have open door and cockpit windows, unfolded rotor and a bit wiring in the cargo cabin.

Here I try to scratch build the "curtain" out of fresh cheese foil cover (aluminium), a ruler and a toothpick. Glueing with Micro kristal klear. So you cannot look into the empty helo tail from the cargo cabin. A H-34 has a kind of net, but in the 4+ pulication for the Wessex I found a pic with such a solid curtain made out of the same material as it is fixed on the top of the cargo cabin and backside of the cockpit. It is for reassuring sound and has very pale green color.

I mixed Humbrol 78 brit. int. green with a bit Humbrol sky 90.

Here a small part collection. It looks like nothing but it was already time consuming for me. I repainted the troop seats in dark blue (due to pics I found). Revell 52 matt blue was a good match to my eye. After that the Eduard seatbelt were added. Italeri also goofed on the seats for the pilots! The backrest cushion is flat and not curved like italeri is giving to us. So I sanded, filled and painted it. One pair of seats recieved the oob PE seatbelts - they are not bad!

Also the decal and PE IP is very nice and comes out pretty good. Here no really need for Eduard! But situation will change for the side, back and over head consoles - Edu adding more detail!

Yes, you are right! The Revell kit is now not up to date anymore. Still have a Wessex HAS.3 from Revell in the stash. I will borrow the rotorblades from that for the folded version. They are straight while the Italeri ones are already pre-bended. That is realistic for a helo on the ground, the blades are hanging. But I have not seen folded blades AND beeing hanging down!

(Italeri could have done the job better by adding 4 straight blades. Also adding seats, benches, strechters, racks for the passenger/cargo cabin as well as a single tail like Gallery did it in the H_34. Stencils are written wrong and have wrong size, weather to small or too big - due to WIP threads and comments in britmodeller). OK here we are, the Gallery kit of the H-34 is much better than Italeri Wessex AND it has about the same price here!!! So the Wessex kit overpriced, but I have no other choice, it is the only 48 Wessex that is molded quite modern. Seams Italeri did a quick shot with limited budget for research. But a Wessex Helo is no secret! You do not have to dig or dive to find one long lost exemplar...just go to museums in UK!! And you still find guys who worked on that bird! Seams i am to silly to understand model company procedures...Oh OK, I went a bit off topic! So today, still busy with fiddly Eduard PE for the office.
