Brad-M
Looking great with her new paint on Joel. I have a set of paint masks from mal as well, but in 1/32 scale. I plan to use them on my current 1/32 Spit Mk XVIe prject and hope it comes out as nice as yours. Look forward to seeing her markings on. Cheers Brad
Joel_W
Wow Joel! The camo came out great. I can't tell if the Iwata brush gives you the kind of results you speak of by looking at the pictures but, I CAN tell, that you know that it does! Brushes as you describe keep an artist from having to hook up multiple brushes with different settings. I personally spray and go.... and hope it comes out good! Too many adjustments and I am confused (not very hard to do!Haha.) Can't wait to see more Joel. You are in the home stretch! -Mark Mark, Thanks for those most kind words. I'm like you, that I like to keep it simple and repeatable. Internal, single action is all we really need. Still a good ways to go, but I'm over the hump. Joel

Kahunaminor
Looking good Joel, I have a couple of sets of Mal's masks that I will be using for the first time (also on my 1/32 Mk XVIe) and I concur with your comments about his instructions. They are clear, concise and take the dread out of the job. I will also second your opinion of Chicago Airbrush, I have purchased both my Grex airbrushes from them and their service is outstanding, even all the way out to us Colonials her in Oz! Regards, Kahunaminor, I've known Mal for years on the Aeroscale list. He's an exceptional modeler, and everyone that I've come in contact with that used his masks just love 'em. There that good. Sure seams like the Spitfire craze is going strong. I'm already changing my build schedule for the year to build at least one more in 1/48 scale. Joel
Joel_W
One thing that I noticed since posting those pictures, is that the dark green color is way, off almost a Brownish color. I had to take a quick peak in the drying box to make sure it's how my Nikon D90 treated the White Balance. The color is Tamiya Dark Green XF-81. So the room light must have played havoc with the D90 sensor, and I didn't catch it as these are just grab pictures. Joel Edited April 23, 2015 by Joel_W
Don
Really looking sharp Joel. Nice crisp camouflage. A question (and forgive me if you've already addressed this), but the stand holding your Spitfire, I have seen these before and wondered what its called and where you got it? I think it would come in handy and I'd like to acquire one. Thanks and great job . Regards, Don.
Crazy Snap Captain
Joel, Tight paint job mate. Nice work and nice save. Looking forward to more. I'm intrigued by your new A/B. I've never used a single action before. How tight is the spray action? Edited April 23, 2015 by Crazy Snap Captain

K5054NZ
I've read and re-read this thread a few times and, well, I'm not sure what I can add to everyone else's comments! You've done a great job on what looks like a great job, and you're making it harder for me to put off getting one. I have one question that's been nagging at me though: for the tail band you used (and again mention) a Sky Grey colour, where most Spits I've seen as real or model have a Sky band, which is more of a duck-egg green colour like that of the squadron codes. Is the grey "correct" for your machine? With the amazing work you've done I really don't want this to come across as criticism or sniping, but as a Spit fan I am curious. Bring on the next update, and well done for recovering from the A vs B scheme debacle!

I would agree that Sky type S is the colour for the band, codes and spinner, as long as it isn't a 2nd TAF scheme. Brad
Shorty84
Hi Joel, really nice work on the paintjob. It takes courage to strip the whole model and repaint it. I think I would just have put it on the "shelf of doom" and waited for my motivation to come back. Markus
chukw
That's looking dandy, Joel- cheers! You got stick-to-itiveness, most certainly.

There are 5 different types to choose from. Scale and bi or single wing options. I got mine from UMM-USA. I've never used a single action before. How tight is the spray action? Crazy Snap Captain, Thanks, and yeah it was nice save. I was betting that I would have screwed it up during the stripping and prep work. I can draw a fine line with the M-1 since it has a .35mm needle. Being a internal mix gun, there is a lot less over spray then what I was use to with my Paasche H and #1 needle & Cone. I really love this new gun. So much so, that I just might retire the Paasche H and buy the M-2 that comes with a larger needle and bigger cup. Joel

The actual color that I'm using for the fuselage band, which hasn't been air brushed on yet, is the same color I used for the spinner assembly: Tamiya XF-21 Sky, not XF-19 or XF-20. Sorry for the confusion. I just grabbed the wrong bottle of paint from my paint shelf. The band will be going on later this afternoon before work. And if I'm lucky, the yellow leading edges as well. Markus Markus, Thanks, but I had reached the point where I just couldn't accept my painting errors, so I had nothing to loose if I screwed it up, and it spent the rest of it's life on the Shelf of Doom. Fortunately, this time it all worked out. Joel

K5054NZ
Thanks Joel, when I saw this: I masked off the fuselage for the fuselage band and painted it Tamiya XF-19 Sky Gray, the same color as the spinner. is when I wanted to put my hand up, but after The A and B Debacle I figured that point was moot! Again, great work and I really admire what you've done.
Joel_W
Zac, I was getting myself confused. that fuselage band was from the 1st painting, and is wrong. The color is XF-19 Sky Gray. The correct color is XF-21 Sky. The only issue is that I thought I had a bottle of it, but the reality is that I don't. So I spent about a 1/2 hour mixing paints to the chip on the Swedish IPMS site. I got the color pretty close, and it looks good to me. I wasn't going to post any more updates till I paint the yellow on the leading edges of the wings. But here's how it now looks vs before.
