I just figured out the house we are staying at this weekend is literally across the street from the Wright Brothers National Monument, so I think I'll be checking that out instead, I'll just have to take the kayak out the following weekend. Thommo Posted April 26, 2015 Share Posted April 26, 2015 Bass, did you say bass? Here's an Aussie bass. And a Yellowbelly (the Aussie name for Golden Perch). Both Australian native fish. This little dam is 200m from our house, and the owner gave me the OK to fly-fish it, because he put Australian Bass in there 10yrs ago but had never caught one, so wanted to see if I could. First time I popped out a Wooly Bugger fly, bam went a bass (but only after I swapped my 20lb leader for 8lb Vanish). Took me three sessions to get a yellowbelly though. VFA-103guy Posted May 12, 2015 Share Posted May 12, 2015 I'm a recreational fisherman..I fish mostly for largemouth bass during the late spring throughout the summer...and I like to fish for snakeheads and bowfins. We typically don't have snakeheads in Alabama, but I've caught 1 in the Flint River and had to report it to the game and fishery dept, but damn did it put up a fight. The largest bass I caught last year was close to 9lbs less than 3 feet from shore off a red and black gary Yamamoto worm on the drop. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
ChesshireCat Posted May 12, 2015 Share Posted May 12, 2015 was out last weekend three or four times. Ran some seriously big streamers on a seven weight fly rod. Could barely cast them! Went up to a very fast eight weight with nine weight line on it. Was able to get solid sixty foot casts, and with some work on my mechanics I think a ninety foot cast is there (those big bugs catch a lot of air when in flight). Anyway the streamers were six to eight inches long, and the colors seem close. Need a little more flash, but close. I got a couple tigers to follow, but they broke off about twenty feet out. Looked like thirty to thirty five inchers. As boney as the mouth of a tiger musky is, I doubt you can get a good hook set further than fifty feet out, and I use some seriously sharp forged hooks. I need a ten weight rod really bad! Started running tube flies late last for the heck of it. Been running nymphs all spring and was catching something on every third cast or even less. Was getting bored! A little too soon for tubes, but who cares. Still no river fishing around here. gary Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I pull most of my bass in SE Virginia using either a Texas rig or Carolina rigged fluke, and cast it right to the edge of the water line from my kayak. Most times the hit will come 2-3 feet from the bank, some really biguns too. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
