Tu-22 Modelsvit in 72nd

Recommended Posts

Wow, missed this initial post and it is AWESOME news. I had that old ESCI kit way back when it was first released and it sat in my stash for years. Then I started reading about all of the issues with it that I figured it was not worth it to fight to get this to some sort of accurate replica. So it went away and to be honest I do not even remember how. Whatever I no longer have it.

This Tu-22 and the Su-24 are some of my favourite Russian bombers. I think I also like the Libyan ones since they have some sort of camo on them.

Of course if we can ever get a Tu-95 in 1/48th I would be over the moon since that is my scale :)

Not quite 35. The ESCI kit was done in 1991. It and the equally mediocre Fokker F-27 were the nails in ESCI's coffin. AMT/Ertl had already bought them by that time, but allowed them to operate as a separate entity. When they screwed the pooch on those two kits, AMT/Ertl shut them down. They existed for a while as a European marketing entity for AMT/Ertl, but those were their last new kits.

AMT is now a part of Round 2 Models, along with MPC, Polar Lights, etc. They have generally stuck with auto kits, although, I have seen the 1/48 Hornet and 1/72 F-14 in new AMT boxes lately.

Sprue shots and price (57 USD) up at HobbyTerra.

I expect the price to be around 40-45 USD at other shops.

Hey Berkut,

Where should I get Modelsvit kits online, I never bought any of their monsters or 1/72 kits...

I tried to check prices and HobbyTerra seemed cheapest, is there any other online shop I am not aware of with better prices?

Sorry for the OT, but I must get that Tu-22 as soon as it hits the shelves:-)

Thanks!

P

I have yet to see a single case where HT is the cheapest. They are consistently the most expensive ones. And it is a fine question, not OT at all.

A random example, new ICM Do-17, 32.7 USD on HT. 23.7USD here.

As far as i can see the Tu-22 kit has only showed up for pre-order on HT so far. I would keep an eye on these sites;

I missed this, great news! Question.....what is a good ref book to buy on the Blinder? Both Russian and export versions.

There are four books that come to mind, apart from this one should look at some excellent Walk around photo collections on Russian sites. The books:

There are two excellent Russian publications on the Tu-22. The Armada booklet was perfect but it is very hard to find today, there is also a hardback A4 book. Just as with the Armada booklet it is also hard to find. But you never know . . . The information in these books are first hand data on the aircraft versions, development systems . . . Unfortunately the quality of paper and print is not so good.

In the Western part of the world there is a Tupolev Tu-22 Blinder by Sergey Burdin and Alan E Dawes. Good photos and lots of information. It is a 270 page book from Pen and Sword Aviation and certainly an advantage over the two above books is that it is in English. The language barrier is also present with the Famous Airplanes of the World No. 114 on Tu-22/-22M. Good collection of archive photos but the language . . .

Best regards

Gabor

I liked that book. I remember reading that the Tu-16 pilots often had a very hard time switching to the Tu-22. No copilot, things happened too fast.

The Armada book is a Squadron-Signal 'In-action' style softback....

There is also the Yefim Gordon and Vladimir Rigmant 'Aerofax' book which covers the Tu-22 Blinder and Tu-22M Backfire:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tu-22-Blinder-Tu-22M-Backfire-Supersonic/dp/1857800656

I also have a thin booklet in Russian from Aviakollektsiya which is not bad.

The hardback mentioned by Gabor is 'Tupolev Tu-22 Blinder' by Sergey Burdin and Alan E Dawes I think :-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tupolev-Tu-22-Blinder-Supersonic-Countermeasures/dp/1844152413

I can't vouch for availability though.....
