Navy ship strikes USS Arizona Memorial

Recommended Posts

Ouch! That will be tough on someone's career. Glad to hear no one was hurt and that the Arizona herself wasn't damaged. I would hate to think of the ecological disaster if they had bumped into the ship and broke open one of those rusted fuel bunkers.

Yep...times like this it becomes clear why the memorial does not actually touch the ship, as some have said. It only bridges it, its support reaching deep beneath the mud to bedrock.

Just glad nobody was hurt! And fortunately it was "only" the boarding dock and ramp; the structure itself seems fine.

As far as the ship, we've been told very clearly that its eventual "collapse is inevitable," we just don't know when. Some of the ship has deteriorated more rapidly than expected, while other areas it is quite the opposite.

Looks like the Mercy will need a new Captain, he's toast.

This is worse that when the Enterprise was grounded in its home port by the pilot guiding it in. He lost his command for that one.

A Hospital ship struck the USS Arizona Memorial deck on Wednesday. No damage was done to the Arizona herself but the Dock was moved about 10 feet. Full story here.

The local news from Honolulu is saying there was no physical collision between the Mercy or tugs and the dock, but that the Mercy's prop wash shoved the dock.

Still WAY too close if it did that much damage.

Should never have been that close to start with. Also, the Mercy should not have been using her own power at the time.(Unless she has a really, really shallow draft and I don't think she does. Nimitz class carriers do not use their own propulsion to move with in the harbor. The tugs pick them up about half way in the channel. Either the harbor pilot, the tug skippers are probably in deep doo-doo, maybe all of them including the Mercy's skipper are. If not, they should be. No excuse for getting that close to Arizona.

Cheers, Terry

She wasn't under her own propulsion: "A statement by Navy Region Hawaii posted to Facebook later confirmed that the dock was struck while tug boats were assisting the USNS Mercy in Pearl Harbor". I got that from the article.
