Crossover styles to Auto modeling?

Recommended Posts

I build almost exclusively 1/48 aircraft but I'm a sucker for an occasional racing Porsche. When I peruse the auto modeling forums I note the car guys seldom use washes to bring out detail.

We all have different styles, maybe it's just what I'm accustomed to but pleats in upholstery without shading? defroster vents in the dash without a black wash to pick them out? Engines and exhausts without shading to pick out pipes or separate elements? To me it just looks unfinished - kinda toylike. So, how about an aircraft group GB of ... CARS. Cars built using the techniques we use building aircraft. I'm not talking about weathered to the point that the Terry Labonte car looks like it was just dredged out of Lake Lloyd, but made to appear three dimensional, real life, real - the way we build planes. I'll leave it to the moderators where to post the entries, but I think it would be interesting and a nice break from the latest Bf 109 E4 D63/15a g6b ( the one with 4 rivets on the radio access door instead of 3) Now, how do I make those circular tire marks on the side? How do I print a 1/24 scale parking ticket for the BMW windshield parked diagonally in 2 spaces? Then, later, the car guys can show us how to get anything that damn glossy.

Auto modeling on here is very sparse. I doubt there will be another GB anytime soon as the super car build is wrapping up now and participation wasn't that great. It's a very specific type of topic you're proposing as well. A lot of the good auto builds I've seen so have washes involved and other things. It just depends on what you're looking or at the end of the build.

It sounds like what you're proposing would be for weathered race cars or vehicles which is very difficult. I think it's much easier to work on aircraft than half the race cars I build but I'll take the cars any day. I've never really tried to race-weather a car yet as I don't think I'd be up to it.
