john53
Here's the start, not much done. I am fixing the ejection seat, not bad but needs ejection pull ring at the headrest from thin copper wire, and a piece of card stock to mount it on. I am also going to paint the raised details on the instrument panel and side consoles.---John Edited September 4, 2015 by john53
john53
Seat done, on to the instrument panel and consoles.---John
john53
Decals are from Microscale sheet 72-162 Colorful Corsairs II's, VA-93 on the USS Midway. The weapons load will be Sidewinder on the fuselage rail, inner wing pylon empty, mid wing pylon MER with 6 Mk 82s and outer wing pylon empty.---John
tosouthern66
John Looking good! I'll start my VA-56 bird as soon as I get the VF-151 F-4B completed or near completion. I my have to try and get some VF-161 decals for the F-4B so we can have 4 Squadrons off the USS Midway. Edited September 4, 2015 by tosouthern66
john53
Gotta love an F-4B! I have the cockpit done and inserted in the fuselage halves. The Fujimi is an accurate kit but definitely not stellar in fit. I am going to need a bit of "nutty putty" to fix the seams.---John
Litvyak
Looking good!
john53
Nose puttied and sanded, canopy on. On to the intake.---John
Thadeus
It's going pretty nice :) Those Fujimi A-7's are pretty nice kits. It's just the fit of that intake part that's bad. Good Luck!
john53
The intake is on. Not a good or bad fit. Hopefully the clamp will bring it in and keep it flush.---John
john53
The clamp worked good, evened the intake and flushed out both sides. Wings on, not much more until I can paint.---John
john53
Added a few more parts. The stabs, missile rails and RWR lump on the tail.---John
tosouthern66
Very nice! Keep it going John.
john53
I have 4 pylons added and the lump to the rear tail bottom. I need to locate 2 more pylons, outer wing with no locator tabs, should be fun. I am still waiting for the Hasegawa weapons set to come in, then I can decide what weapons to load, probably Mk82s.---John
jminer
Coming along nicely! Justin
Crazy Snap Captain
Looking good John. I love Corsairs. Look forward to more.
RKic
Hi John. I'm building the same kit as you, and I hope you don't mind, but I will be stealing your technique for improving the seat. Where did you source those decals? I'm having an impossible time finding anything for a Vietnam era A-7A or B. Just a bunch of E stuff out there.
john53
Not a problem, any thing I can help with let me know. The decals were just luck. I hit it just right on e bay. I was thinking I should have built an E model, all kinds of decals for that, A and B are super hard to locate. I have I think an A-7B from VA-56 I am not using. Champions were on I think Midway 1970? The plane is Bu154509 an A-7B I believe. What I can't confirm is there is tail code AH, I thought VA-56 was tail code NH in Vietnam. Let me know if the decals will work. Microscale gives you no stars or national insignias though, use kits as I am.---John Edited September 21, 2015 by john53
RKic
Hmm, that is odd. I though AH tail codes were worn by VF-111 around that time. VF-56 was NF as far as I can tell. Maybe I'm wrong. I actually found a Printscale sheet on Hannants that has an A-7A from USS Ticonderoga from 1968. Their green looks too olive, but I think I'll be able to make it work. Thanks for the offer though, and good luck with the rest of your build.
john53
I have decals for VA-25 with green tails, Fist Of The Fleet, flew A-7Es with no missile rails, odd plane with no carrier name on it.---John
john53
This is what you are doing? A-7B from Ticonderoga VA-25 1968. This plane is Bu 154479 which today I think is on display in Texas somewhere.---John
RKic
Yep. Something like that. I think there are multicolored pennants on the rudder. Edit On second thought, maybe I wont be getting the Printscale sheet. I dont know the full story behind this aircraft, but having taken a closer look at the decal sheet, its got some odd stuff. For example the pilot is listed as CDR. Lyndon B. Johnson ??? Edited September 21, 2015 by RKic
john53
That's odd. LBJ, an LCDR., was sent to southwest Pacific by Forrestal and Roosevelt to check out conditions on air bases. He simply looked things over and told Roosevelt and Forrestal that they needed more planes, better planes and 6,800 more men. Was never a Naval aviator and never flew a plane.---John Edited September 22, 2015 by john53
john53
Weapons set came in. Lots of bombs, napalm, TERS and MERS. I am thinking a set of TERs with Mk 82s. The A had an under powered engine and the Navy was also afraid it might ingest the steam from the catapult and stall out so they limited the amount it could carry, or so I have read.---John
Thadeus
I like this loadout with 82's loaded on TERs, perhaps You could exchange them for 83's? :) 12 mk82's on MERs however are my personal favourite ;) and if I may tempt You for something a little different: My link I really like those Fujimi A-7's, wish I had better acces to them. john53
Thanks Thadeus. What is that load, 3 LAU 10 rocket launchers on a MER on outside pylon and Mk 83 on each 2 inner pylons? I like it, wild looking. I just happen to have LAU 10s!---John
