Ooh, oils! Nice!

Thanks RKic and yes....for the last 2 years I've been using artist oils as my primary media for modelling after a long experimental to find the best way to use this wonderful media on modelling subbject. I still use all other basic techniques like airbrushing, whashing etc. but oil paint is the one I am using the most....

Hi all,

I've been so busy with work and haven't got a chance to do anymore on the Nook since....got sometime last night (Friday in Oz) and got some more work done of the cockpit...

The floor is done using artist oil colors (except the alu rails with hooks were painted with Humbrol enamel paint) to paint/render, the beauti is that I can paint/render/weathering at the same time...

Next, I used artist water color masking fluid (I preferred this masking fluid as it is so thin, almost like water and dries quite quick in thin layer)to mask out all the dials window on the clear instrument panel....then give it 1 or 2 coats of matt black spray can paint....

The control panel being painted and the masking removed, next to it is the console and dash, they are all hand painted with oil colors and a touch of Vallejo acrylic red, white and yellow paint straight on the wet oil (they don't mix...)

Here is the dry-fit at the end of the session and the oil paint on the instrument/console/dash are still wet though but I can grab it at the edge/corner and put them together then touch up any mudge I caused by holding it with a small/fine brush straight on the area(s) without adding more paint, the oil just blend it self like magic....once they are dried then I can glue them down....

Until the next time...

Cheers

You airbrush the oils?

Do they take a really long time to dry when you then them enough for spraying? How durable is the paint when that thin?

Yes, I do airbrush the oil too but at the moment only for touch up and weathering / smoke trails....I guess you can airbrush it but may need to build up slowly but when it dries (overnight as it's sprayed or small / thin brush painted, unlike real oil art painting on canvas that would take sometime to dry...) and it's really cool that when it's brush painted, it left fine brush marks but when it's dried, all the brush marks are gone. I also use a clear gel (oil colour medium) mixed with the oil paint to reduce brush marks and dries in 2 hours....
