Due to an unfortunate rash of accidents, Base Defense section was starting to come up short on M-151 jeeps. Motor pool gave our section a couple CJ5s on a temporary loan and our 151s went to A.B.D.

They also started to borrow 151s from the higher ups when they could.

One 3 man S.A.T. grabbed the NCOIC's jeep.

As the G.I drove along the perimeter fence he ran over a cobra. Thinking that he could take it downtown after work and have it stuffed, he threw it into the back of the jeep. A few minutes later the local sitting next to him that manned the M-60 jumped out. As he turned, toward the guard who was now rolling on the ground, he npticed that his third man had already left and his dead cobra has raised up, flaired its hood and was moving side to side as it gauged its target. He immediately left the jeep too which crashed into a nearby tree.

A Base Defense vehicle was posting on the perimeter one night. Stopping at a tower the guard tied his M-60 to the rope used to haul it up and started climbing the ladder. As the truck waited for him to reach the top they watched as he, according to the driver, did a great push off from about the 7th rung or so. Someone had tied a deadly Krait to the ladder and fortunately he had put his hand on top of the snake and it couldn't move.

One night I was giving a ride to a tail gunner who had been celebrating shooting down a mig and needed a ride to his barracks. After dropping him off I saw another jeep sitting a short distance away and went over to talk to him. When I pulled up I noticed that the ground didn't look right. It seems that our local snake guy had once again seeded the ground with a variety of poison snakes. Never did find out who it was or how he did it.

It was always a bit comforting at night to watch a mongoose running across the road in your area. Every little bit helps.
