The K-9 patrol was scouting out the large patch of on base jungle we had not far from the fence and the outermost runway. He was starting to get a bit annoyed with his dog because for the last several minutes he would go to alert and nothing could be seen. Soon the dog alerted again and he pulled the leash hard and kept walking. The dog caught up and once again alerted to something behind them. Angry this time, the G.I. turned around and pulled on the leash hard but the dog wouldn't obey, he just kept looking to the rear. Bringing out his flashlight, he did a quick sweep to give himself another reason to be angry when the beam reflected off something that shouldn't be there. Moving the light back to the spot, he saw two reflections and a dark shape. He took off the lens cover to let the full size beam out and found himself looking at a black leopard sitting by a tree, looking at him. Evidently it had been following them for some time. Pulling the dog in close and bringing up his GAU, he started to walk backwards until hr got to the perimeter road and crouched behind some bushes. Soon he remembered he had radio and called for the SAT truck to pick them up ASAP.

Word spread and from time to time a bunker or tower would spot the cat coming through the fence or catch it nearby with a NOD scope and call Defense Control who would make a general transmission to all posts and especially K-9 who would withdraw from the jungle.

On another night a jeep operated by the flight chief with a guest pulled up on a perimeter post. Because he was not alone the guard challenged them from the dark. The flight chief informed him that he had a guest who wanted to go out and talk to some of the guys on duty. Being soaked, standing in mud, and tired, and waiting for his food to show up, the guard the visitor know in no uncertain terms what he thought about his present condition.

The visitor listened politely until he was finished. then the flight chief turned over the in flight meal he was taking to some of the posts and introduced his guest as a Chaplin who was just starting his tour and wanted to get an feel of the base and its people.
