Uschi Van Der Rosten makes some **amazing** wood grain decal for the 1/32 WnW kits that could easily be used for a model car. The scale is pretty much irrelevant for wood grain.

The banner of that website still creeps me out a bit, I really don't know what to think of that. Beautiful products though.

Getting a straight grain is relatively easy. You paint a background color, usually a lighter brown/tan, using enamel, lacquer, or acrylic per your preferences. Once that's dry, you get a stiff "oil" brush and brush a foreground oil pant. The stiff brushes gives you the grain effect. Oil takes a long time to dry, think a week. It also needs a clear coat. The art, of course, is getting other than straight grain.
