Weathered, faded, and dirty planes

Recommended Posts

Of course not an airplane, but shot this Chinook in El Paso right before a dust storm/thunderstorm. Loved how faded and dirty it was.

Nice photos! Amazing how patchy CARC Helo Olive Drab can get. Almost as bad as Navy TPS.

Some dirty, faded and weathered aicraft.. (All photos taken by me in case anyone wants to know)

A veteran aircraft, but it looked this bad when it was in regular service. They looked exactly the same when I was doing work practice on them 25 years ago

At least they have touched up the area around where the ladder is attached. This area gets very chipped. The newer olive green contrasts to the older, more faded paint.

An example of pre-/postshade in the real world.

"Can someone tell me the exact colour used on the underside of the Polish Tu-22s?"

Not only does the aircraft have slightly different colours (one os more green, the other is more blue), the underside is a patchwork of different shades.

The Transall belonging to Patrouille de France did not have quite the same immaculate paintwork as the Alpha Jets.

Couldn't find any examples right away, but for my taste, nothing beats USN's A-6Es, A-7Es, and F-14s of the 1980s in this regards.

When painted in tactical paint scheme, and then weathered by few months on the high sea, some corrosion, some sanding and re-spraying... ooooooh....

I took this at an airshow several years ago.

Does anyone know the dimensions of the aircraft's supporters?

If you have an F-104 kit fuselage handy those H cross section stands should be relatively easy to approximate their dimensions since luckily they're visible at various angles between the one in the front and right side.

I've looked at hundreds of photos of Marine Vietnam A-4s and A-6s in Vietnam and their aircraft looked relatively clean with the exception of some wear/tear, flaking, and staining. Hans Vogelpohl provided many fantastic photos when he was with VMA-311 in 1969-70, these were by far the dingiest looking Marine aircraft I've seen in that time (I know the Marine F-8s also looked very beat). Not intentionally trying to plug AOA in the thread here, just sharing one of Hans's photos of a very dirty A-4 that was used as a cover image:

The paint on Russia's MiG-29SMTs seem to already be chipping and fading away:

The paint on their active duty 9-12s are in pretty rough shape:

They've been repainting them lately: http://russianplanes.net/id178309
