I've been watching a few movies that involved aircraft to a minor degree (meaning they weren't the main focus), and I've been thinking (didya smell the wood burning fumes :woot.gif: ) well anyway a few have me asking is it really possible...such as in "Airport '79 when that prototype of missile dodging maneuvers the Concorde outruns a "sniffer" :woot.gif::whistle: ;then the move "Earthquake" where the geologist was about to land in L.A. on an airliner and the 707 landed on a runway being shaken severely by the shaker and the aircrew pours on the power and they barely get off the ground (I still find myself urging it to hurry up), FF to 2012 when the pro chauffeur/fledgling writer and family are leaving L.A. in a Cessna 340 barely getting airborne actually dropping a bit, but so was the ground so it's all good, on to Vegas where they barely escape again this time on a Antonov 500, :hmmm: didn't know they made that one yet  yup big jump from the 225 to the 500, oh well it must be I mean if flew from Las Vegas to Hawaii, which was sinkingp oh oh, no fuel here; so on across big Blue, to deep into China....saaaaaaaay what?!?! all that way without refueling..WOW I need to get me one of those, oh wait it crashed somewhere in the Himalayas, but still that's a lonnnnnnnnnng way...wait 'ang on a tic...I forgot that super plane AF 1 and it's escape in Independence Day with all of Wash. DC exploding and the flames of destruction nipping at the tail and wings it as it leaves a dying capital whew!!! that was close...did ya see the complimentary escort of two Eagles off the wings...had to be more just out of camera range :D B) those are the ones I think of, I'm sure I've missed a few; help me out movie buffs....

In 2012, I believe they made it to China because it (China) had shifted east because of the earthquakes, thus the range was shortened. Soooooo much more believable hey... <_<

Hey it could happen.....sounds plausible to me B)

And one that didn't get away: watching Thirteen Days (2000) on TV the other night, I marvelled at the strenuous aerobatics pulled by the unfortunate U-2 jockey attempting to avoid Cuban SAMs -wouldn't the wings come off long before the missile hit...? Artistic Licence suspended for 12 months; next case!

Independence Day is one of Mrs' favourite movies; I just love how they pimped those Hornets with Phantom seats, can't argue that retro '60s charm! Pretty sure they had 8-Ball throttle levers and chrome joysticks welded from chain links too... :woot.gif:

This reminds me of something that I was a bit skeptical of in the recent movie "San Andreas." The whole movie is of course one long over-the-top 70s disaster movie cliche. Anyway, The Rock is alone in his rescue chopper..which he straight-up steals after abandoning his job when the quake hits (you know..when he's most needed.) He's trying to rescue his (of course) estranged wife from a collapsing building, and puts the helo in "auto hover" so he can go back an operate the winch. Is there such a feature on helicopters, or is that a bit of "Movie Magic."

"Independence Day" has to be one of my favorite guilty pleasure "popcorn movies." It is of course ridiculously implausible from beginning to end, but still loads of fun. I really wish they'd kept the original ending, where Cousin Eddie is rejected as a pilot in the final battle, but then shows up at the last minute on a Kamikaze mission with a missile strapped to his Stearman. The scene was re-edited in post-production, which is why if you listen to the dialogue of the controllers it doesn't make a lot of sense (Supposedly everybody's out of missiles..how did they not know that Cousin Eddie still had one? And how did they not know who he was, if they were getting real-time telemetry from all the aircraft?) This is from the DVD, but unfortunately you can't watch it without the director's commentary.

Certain helicopters have a "Hover mode" on the autopilot, but the TWO rescue pilots still sit at their seats and monitor power and move the machine around. all it does is assist in holding the position.

"Tipping the hat" is also complete bull$hit, and made me furious... sooo much stupid in that movie...

I think that movie used all the stupids..several years' worth of all the stupids. I'm willing to suspend disbelief in the name of entertainment (Independence Day) but San Andreas was just too ridiculous to even enjoy sarcastically.

Fast and Furious 6, an Antonov comes to rescue a bad guy. A chase ensues I a runway that was about 10 miles long, at least, because the chase last quite a bit, the plane getting shot by harpoons, and a takeoff role that was exceedingly lethargic. Oh my great stuff!

J.Q. Public filling the seats are amazed at how great a pilot he was, and how a heroic pilot did all that stuff, but then he's the "Rock", I mean dang; he lead the army of Anubis and wiped out almost all of the ancient world  . Now about that beach front property I've got in the Urals, interested? :D .
