Brad-M
Guys, I am doing the planning stages for an upcoming F-4D project. I have the Academy F-4C kit, and am planning to build it as an F-4D. I wanted to add an AM cockpit for it, and I see that Aires offers both a C and D cockpit, so my questions are; do I need to go to a D cockpit if doing a D aircraft, and secondly, will the D cockpit fit into the Academy C kit? TIA Brad
Jennings
The C and D rear cockpits were very different - mainly the instrument panel. I've never experienced a single piece of Aires resin that comes remotely close to fitting into the kit they said it was designed for in the first place, so my gut instinct says "no". Brad-M
Ok, thanks for that. Now, how do I tell the difference between an early D cockpit and a late one, because Aires offers both. The F-4D I am building is an F-4D-29-MC #66-7463. TIA Brad
Jennings
That probably has more to do with the time period you're depicting rather than the serial number. I'm not that up on the differences, but I doubt anyone else is going to know the difference either :)
LVZ2881
To add on a question to the original post. Will the Academy F-4C build a -D , or do I need to get the Korean F-4D kit? Sorry to hi Jack, but it seems like the place to ask.
Brad-M
Hi, No problems hijacking, but I have been told and there are reviews that say a -D can be built. The kit has two sets of IP's and for what I've been told, that's the big difference. HTH Brad Edited December 15, 2015 by Brad-M
F4DPhantomII
You can build either a C or D out of the C kit.The parts are there for both.
Brad-M
Yes, but my original question was about aftermarket pits from Aires. Any idea if the Aires F-4D cockpit is specific to the ROK aircraft, or does it matter? Thanks Brad
BillS
Depends on the time your airplane is being modeled. in 48 scale the cockpit configurations are essentially the same. what made a D model vs a C was a new bombing system. The main vertical panel in the PSO/WSO cockpit was quite similar to a C but was altered over time by RHAW, LORAN etc. I can remember Ds in my unit and the differences present form airplane to airplane. Side console differences were very similar and I'd bet in 48th you could not perceive differences. The really bigger difference was the pilot's sight/glare shield area. I don't have links handy but I'm sure a quick search will yield useful images. Aires is tricky to fit but in my mind the detail is the best, most accurate. I've done 2 Bs and one C with Aires. I just used Aires in a SU-24 Fencer for cockpit and gear wells and they fit quite nicely. Don't forget the Radome on early Ds was sans the chin fairing as well. onescale
Maybe this is of some help: http://aviation.watergeek.eu/f4c-panel.html http://www.f4phantomparts.com/COCKPITS.html or try some Bing/Google search.... What BillS wrote seems quite right! I Think it's hard to tell which airframe got which update/configuration at what time?! I'm using an Aires "early" cockpit set for my 1971 F-4D build, since it already shows the RHAW-gear and looks right to me for this time frame. The "late" cockpit looks to me more of a post war/ 1980s configuration? Regards, Jens
