Pete
As I'm currently filling and sanding on the 1/48 Intruder, which I find quite boring, I started a couple 1/72 jets. I will post the progress of all 3 kits in this thread. On the bench are two Hasegawa kits, one F-4B and one F-4J. These will be done in VF-21 markings on the B and VF-96 on the J. Also on the bench is an Academy F-8E, which will be done as Dick Bellinger's MiG killer in VF-162 markings. Decals will come Wolfpak for VF-96 (Showtime 106) and the 2011 IPMS USA sheet for VF-21 (Sundown 102) and VF-162 (Superheat 210). Progress pics will follow shortly, currently working on the cockpits. Pete
Right, pics. Pretty much done with the cockpits, the usual Hasegawa decals in the Phantoms, and very nice plastic detail in the Academy F-8. Shows what 20 odd years on kit design progress looks like: A closer look at the F-8 pit, quite small and dark in there: And all the bits that go inside the F-8 fuselage before you close it: And finally, a pair of Phantom wings. Not very interesting, but hey, where would a plane be without its wings?
Pete
Got some good work done this week. I closed the fuselage on all three, and put the wings and assorted small details on both Phantoms. I also glued the wings together on the F-8, but that's not on the pic. From left to right, F-4B, F-8E and F-4J.
Pete
Progress is a bit slow on these at the moment, as I'm mostly working on the 1/48 A-6A, but here's a new pic. I ordered two sets of outboard wing pylons for the Phantoms from Hypersonic Models a while ago, and I just glued a pair on the F-4J. They're nicely detailed, and easy to use. Pete
I decided to paint all the seats for the F-4's, F-8 and the Intruder at the same time, so here they all are in the black basecoat. Kit seats will be used on the F-8 and F-4's.
Pete
Progress on the Crusader is a little ahead of the two Phantom, but I should be able to start painting those tomorrow, I think. Only have to paint the coroguard on the F-8, and then I can start prepping it for decals:
kurnass77
Great Pete, the F-8 shape was do beauty! I've the Acsademy kit mate, how fit? I'm interested very much like always at the decals ,as I've also the same sheet! Gianni
Pete
Thanks Gianni! The F-8 kit is lovely to work with. The panellines are maybe a little bit heavy, but the fit is great. It does seem to be designed to have the wing raised, but with a bit of sanding, you can have it lowered too. The decals look excellent on the sheet, and they should look great on the model too. Just a small observation, you may notice that I painted the tip of the fin in white, as per instructions, but it should be grey like the rest of the fin. I have that fixed now. I also painted the grey on the F-4's. You may notice that one has the radome masked, and the other one hasn't. That's because I accidentaly dropped the F-4B, which caused the IR sensor tip to snap off. Luckily I had a spare one, but the radome needs a bit of a repaint now. kurnass77
Thanks Pete! Sad hear of the F-4 mishap, but you've already rectified it,not a difficult fix, especially for a modeler like you! And now down with the decals! How you programmed to load the Frelancers bird?I think to arm mine with an early configuration:centerline tank, two Sparrows on the aft fuselage and a third under the port inner pylon ans two AIM-9B on the starboard one. phantom
Those are coming along great Pete.
Pete
Thanks guys! Gianni, I guess we both got our inspiration from this pic. :D I was thinking about doing that loadout too, I just need to get me some missiles, as I'm all out of them. I also started with the decals on the F-8, and ran into a problem right with the first decal. Afterburner made the tailstripes much too small. They should fit over the whole fin, right above the rudder. But if you put these over the fin, they end up half way between the rudder and the tip. I checked the spares, and found an ancient Microscale sheet, which fits perfectly. Not sure what AB did wrong, the other decals on the sheet seem to be fine. The AB tailstripe on top, the Microscale one below it: I guess I will use the Microscale one, and cut out the number from the AB one.
kurnass77
Thanks guys! Gianni, I guess we both got our inspiration from this pic. :D/>/> You're right Pete, both this image and the Page/Batson story on the Grey Ghost and Osprey books;if you need the missiles fire me off your adress, are ready on my desk. The only thing you need to do its slightly convert the "all-finned" one,is a -M from the Academy Hornets. Pete
Go Navy! Slowly working on the decals on all three models. I do one side on a model, then move to the next model, and so on. Currently working on the F-4B. Each one gets a mix of aftermarket and kit decals, which all work well. One slight problem was the tail markings on the F-4J, as they are a bit too small. Oh well, it still looks good.
kurnass77
Beautiful trio! Effectively the black falcon marking look a little small but still good in my opinion! Gianni
Spectre711
They look great Pete!
Pete
Well, I didn't complete all of them before the deadline, but the Crusader is just about finished. Only have to put on the missiles, which were kindly donated by Gianni. (Thanks!) Here's a pic of it now, I will put more up once the missiles are done.
kurnass77
What beauty! Gianni
Andre
Mogge Pete, very nice indeed! What paint did you use for the Light Gull Gray? Cheers, Andre
Pete
Middag Andre, Thanks! I used ModelMaster enamel 1730 for it. It's what I usually use for light gull grey. I noticed that you can get Gunze paint in Groningen now, though, so maybe I will give that a try next time.
Andre
Middag Andre, Thanks! I used ModelMaster enamel 1730 for it. It's what I usually use for light gull grey. I only used it once, but found it a bit too brownish for my taste. Perhaps I had a bad bottle. I noticed that you can get Gunze paint in Groningen now, though, so maybe I will give that a try next time. You're telling me! Lovely stuff - I've must have bought half of Krikke's Gunze stash already... :) Cheers, Andre
Pete
And here's Showtime 106 finished, apart from the missiles: Sundown 102 shouldn't take too long to be finished. After that, I shall add the weapons to all three builds.
kurnass77
This's beautiful Pete! You intend configure with a CAP load out or maybe with a pair of TERs? Gianni
Pete
Thanks Gianni. All three have Air to Air loads only. They're all done now: More pics in the display case
Stefan buysse
Very nice, Pete. I love that shot of all three together. Cheers, Stefan.
