1/35 U.S. Army UH-60A Blackhawk Medevac WIP

Recommended Posts

Gino, is it accurate to put those guns in a medevac bird? It would look great!

Rod.

Unfortunately, no. Usually, MedEvac helos in US service are unarmed. The US follows the Geneva Convention which gives protection and forbids firing on vehicles and aircraft marked as medical transports; ie. red crosses. Unfortunately, most of our enemies do not follow the same. Usually, a MedEvac helo will have an armed helo as an escort. It is not forbidden in the Geneva Convention for MedEvac helos to carry defensive weapons, but the US MedEvac community sees it as against the Hippocratic Oath (do no harm) to carry weapons which could cause harm.

Ok i see. I plan to do a national guard Alpha Medevac, in an almost pristine condition, not so weathering.

Rod.

Hey Rod! Nice to see this build back on the attack! :) Hey don't be afraid to beat it up just a little. Even when we pulled them off the wash rack, there were still spots on the bird that were chipped and faded. Especially in the cabin, and especially on the medevac carousel. Either way, I cant wait to see more of your Black Hawk. Let me know if you need reference pics - I was in the medevac in Korea, 95-96.

Cheers!

Thanks for your support Ramon.

I would be happy if you help me. I havent decided yet what bird am i going to build. The WW decal sheet has a lot of options, but two of them has caught my attention, an A model medevac flown by CW3 Eric Swanberg from A-stan ca.2004, and an L model from the SFOR in 2000.

Do you know in what time frame did they started to use the carousel?

My initial plan was to build an HH-60L, but this bird has a more complex medical interior, and will require heavy scratchbuild, plus you have to seal the crew chief windows.

Thanks.

Rod.

They have been around quite a while. I came in the Army in the early '90s and the litter carousels were already in use then. I would guess in the mid to late '80s was when they were fielded.

the carousel was in use during the 80's and 90's, and perhaps still in use today in most units but from what i have seen from posted pics and talking with people who were there, in afghanistan they took out the carousel and just put the stretchers with patients on the cabin floor. the carousels are pretty heavy and in afghanistan, dumping that extra weight allowed them to cover our forces up at the higher elevations. Of course, more accurate info about that would come from guys that were there. my first hand knowledge was only good until 1999.

oh yeah, one other thing - the only difference externally between a UH-60A and a UH-60L as far as modelers are concerned is the step fairing beneath the pilot's doors. the short ones that come with the kit are perfect for an Alpha, for a Lima you would want to use the ones from cobra company. The Alpha ones extend out to line up with the centerline of the main landing gear wheel as viewed from the front. On Limas, the step fairing was enlarged to accommodate a better vibration absorber and extended out to be in line with the outside of the main landing gear wheel. below is one of my photos of me and my C2 bird in bosnia. hopefully my overlays help explain what i mean but if i just made things more confusing let me know and i will make a better drawing.

Hope this helps!

UH-60A Medevac is more prevalent than L models. Most all Medevac helos have some form of weathering on them unless they just came out of the wash rack. If you want to weather concentrate on the tail boom aft of the exhausts and the upper fuselage, more sun and dust collects up there,I will see if I have some pics of my birds in Afghanistan and post here

Great shots Erick, thanks for the help.

Ray, any help is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Tim, thank you, yes, the wheels are excellent, and youre correct, there are two options to chose from, the weighted ones (the one i ordered) and the other is the non weighted.

Thanks for the photos Erick. Now i have some reference to my build. I will build your bird.

Do you remember if you had the carousel installed? And what other medical equipment did you had onboard?

Hope you can help me with the progress.

Thanks.
