ikar
I got this one from a pilot when I was stationed at Kadena and working in Wing Scheduling for the 18th TFW. I was standing by after hours in the office for a message to arrive, just listening to a couple pilots. One was a former 105 driver and on this particular mission had a twin seater. After hitting their target they were heading off to meet up with the rest of their group for the trip home. Soon the back seater called that he spotted something turning behind them. With a couple quick maneuvers they identified it as a Mig. The pilot dropped his tanks and hit his afterburner as he went into a evasive maneuver. They knew they had the speed but not the agility and therefore not the advantage in this case. Asking the guy in back where the Mig was he was told that he lost him. This is not what you would want to hear. Then he heard the voice in back tell him to look back right. When he looked he saw a tank in the air and not too far from that a fireball and falling debris, boy no sign of the fighter. Not taking chances, they kept accelerating and left the area. During debriefing they explained the whole thing and tried to claim the kill. Even though other aircraft confirmed their radio transmissions, there was no other eye witnesses available. They had no choise but to accept the ruling.
