sundowner
Hi Tomcat Fanatics , Here is a scan of a slide from the hand of Joe Cupido ( used with permission of Joe ) It a F-14D from VF-124 163897 . ( Jul 1992 ) If you are missing something below the nose , well I did too .....there is no chin pod !! was this common practice or what?? Njoy , Henk
phantom
Note "common" but it happened. Pod might have needed maintenance or it was put on a fleet airframe. Notice that photo is of a VF-124 RAG plane, A training plane. Not a fleet plane.
Darren Roberts
That is one over-exposed photo right there. The TPS colors look really weird.
Antoine
How do you tell its a D and not a B without the chinpod?
aim9xray
How do you tell its a D and not a B without the chinpod? "Horns" instead of loops on the ejection seat headbox.
Andrew Maverick Taylor
How do you tell its a D and not a B without the chinpod? Presence of SJU-17 NACES ejector seats which don't have the grab handles at the top Slave unit box on top of the RIO's instrument coaming Deletion of Supersonic wing vanes on wing glove leading edge Deletion of AN/ALR-45 ECM antennas under the wing glove next to the air intakes Normally the dual chin pod mounted under the nose (but removed in this instance) The B versions were basically upgraded A versions with the ECM package under the glove vanes and upgraded Gun Gas vents but were modified with the GE F110 engines and initially called F-14A+ but were redesignated F-14B and were later upgraded again when the Bombcat and Lantirn suit was retrofitted. The F-14D was a complete redesign of the system, more internally than externally. Edited February 1, 2016 by Andrew Maverick Taylor
