Sebastian Haff
Looking for input on how you guys simulate wood grain. Heres a method I've used with reasonable success: I start with a base coat of skin tone or tan, gloss varnish, and then using a fairly large brush I 'streak on' burnt or raw umber until I get the effect I'm looking for. Usually I'll end with a gloss or satin varnish. As i said, this has worked well for me before but I've only ever used it on small peices like props or tools. I'm wanting to do an entitre cockpit interior this time, and I'm not sure this method will work for such a large area. I'd appreciate any techniques you'd like to share. Thanks, and happy modeling. 82Whitey51
Buy this stuff...anything else besides actual wood is a waste of time. http://www.uschivdr.com/
Eric Larson
Hi Sebastian, IMO, the best way to simulate wood grain is using artist oil paints. I've written a tutorial on the technique that has worked very well for me and can be found here: http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/woodgrainel_1.htm This is my Wingnut Wings LVG referred to in the article: And here's a 1/48 Eduard Albatros on which I used the same method. I hope this helps. Cheers, Eric
crackerjazz
That blows me away -- hard to believe it's not real wood, Eric! And your work is captivating -- everything is done in exacting detail!

Silenoz
also did my first experiments with this technique, and the result is good... Only thing I didn't do was the thing with the spunge, or otherwise I did something wrong with that. But it's a great guide, thx Eric. Sebastian Haff
So I checked out the Uschi site, and wow. That looks incredible. Problem is that I'm a bit confused about which decal sheet to get. Fine, coarse? I'm wanting to do the entire airframe and interior but I don't know which would be best. Any suggestions? BTW I'm building in 1/48 and mostly an Albatross and a Horten Glider. Any suggestions as to which sheet I should get? Thanks and happy modeling!
