SinisterVampire319
About the post war markings of Army Air Force aircraft. On an P-80 for example P(N)- and the last three of the aircraft tail numbers. Then after 1947 when the USAF came in they changed the whole system. Pursuit to Fighter and so on. So on the aircraft it changed from PN to FT. I know the first letter F is for fighter, etc. But what was the second letter meaning? I saw somewhere in the books years ago can't remember now. I thought it had something to do with what the capability of the aircraft. All weather, nightfighter, day fighter, etc.
Jennings
The second letter identified the specific aircraft type. Somewhere I used to have a complete list, but an example was FE for the F-106, FC for the F-102, FH for the F-105, etc.
