1:48 J-8II Finback B PLA

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

What a wonderful GB theme. So far I haven't done anything coming from The Far East, so this is a nice opportunity. Big up to Vince for starting this.

I will be doing a Chinese built Shenyang J-8II interceptor, a second generation finback with redesigned nose and fuselage. The intake was replaced by two side intakes very similar to the MiG-23 intakes. The story goes Chinese reverse engineered some Egyptian 23s in the late 70s. To me it looks like a Su-15/MiG-21/23 hybrid, and it is one beast of a plane because of its dimensions..

OK let's check out the kit. It is a local subject for Trumpy, by that I assume it is quite correct in shape in size.

The date on it says 2010, the plastic looks nice, the surface details are excellent. It is boxed nicely with a separate compartment for some parts like one piece exhaust, clear parts, radome, on of the two ejection seats and a PE fret.

There are many sprues with many parts including the armament. Decals look nice, although there could be more stencils...

That's it for now. Stay tuned

That looks like a quite complicated kit. I posted another banner in which you might be interested.

The wait is finally over, ah Vasko?

Since I'll probably building Finback-B as well - have you thought about which paint to use for it? Looks like very light grey or even off-white, but can't find anything suitable in my paint stash.

Thanks for the banner Darwin, you've done 'em all nice..

Seb you're right. I've waited quite some time for this GB, and forgot about it meanwhile. Well I'm happy it's on now.

Regarding the paint, I've thought about it too. I think I've read somewhere they were actually white and that they switched to grey tone with the next upgrade. I guess it all goes down on the right tone of white or stuff like different color layers. Maybe a grey wash would do the trick? ...

I like this dirty look on this white plane, something like this...

I'm very glad you're doing this one too. For sure this is going to get more interesting from now on ;)

Very interesting project, Vasko!

Have you got any Python... erm... PL-8s for your J-8II too?

(BTW, re. serials: ever thought about making this one? http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Stories1/001-100/0004_Chinese_Interceptor/story0004.htm Should've been the example that collided with USN's EP-3, back in April 2001...)

Thanks Tom, I'm glad you came around this GB. Thanks for the suggestion too, that's exactly what I was thinking about... J-8II in action

Had to check the the armament sprues to be sure about the PL-8s...

IMG_20160315_133352.jpg

i guess this is the Python ehm PL-8... Could be better I guess, for the time it will do...

IMG_20160315_133359.jpg

The current status of the build is that I am waiting for the DreamModels PE to arrive from HK... The OOB instrument panel looks weird and the decals for it contain a whole specter of colors, totally unrealistic...

Oh, that looks quite fine to me. Flatt white overall, please. ;-)

;) that's it, right?

I just couldn't resist waiting anymore longer for those PE parts to arrive, so I decided to start with the work not including the cabin...

Yup, it's one of those kits...

Anyway, the inside of the exhaust looks weird anyway, and not much will be visible once closed up...

A bit of masking tape is the easiest way to deal with this. In this case at least..

and the painting of the interior...

Thanks Darwin.

Usually I use turpentine and oil paints but in this case it is MIG dark brown wash. Basically the same...

Thanks Martin

Ok, I have received the PE, traveled a bit more than a week from China to EU. Record time I guess...

It isn't much, somewhat like the price... most of it is ladder, which kind of doesn't budge me.

But the IP looks great and that's what I was looking for I guess.

Perfect! ;-)

(Note: nowadays the late-mark J-8s are armed with PL-12s too, but that's an entirely different story from what you're building here.)

Some small progress on the Finback...

The kit itself is very nice with great details... but the sinkholes...

The fuselage halves fit quite ok... here's a shot of the cockpit...

You did well with the parts given. But I've really been unimpressed with prepainted PE cickpits lately. Still, you did a very neat and tidy job with yours.

I'm looking forward to seeing more. I like the finback, and I bet it's a real monster in 1/48

Thanks for the comments guys.

RKic, actually it is not pre-painted... I did it myself. And I know what you mean, I've seen some pre-painted Eduard PE I didn't like...

Oh, the Finback is a real beast... when I thought Fitter is huge...

Check out the beastie boys

The finback is finally glued together. The fit is... well ok, considering the size of the fuselage...
