IDF/AF F-4E(S) "Peace Jack"

Recommended Posts

Thinkabout loadout, who would waste the resource on an air to ground mission, it has no radar and thus can only carry an IR missile, do you need the missile? it will only add drag, 50,000 feet and mach 1.9 make speed physics and geometry your best defense, along with F-15 escorts, thats my theory.

Exactly. Remember, these jets were essentially their version of the SR-71, high speed, high altitude, recon only.

But IAF never adopted US recon slogan of "alone and unarmed")))))))

Here's a link to an Israeli forum with one of the RF-4ES refuelling,

carrying a Winder and wing tanks

Maybe it's from Isra or Airdoc books

Another post

The discussion there about squadrons' kills

Here's one built,no weapons

your last link, showing a build of the RF-4ES. i think that this was the EagleDesign resin bits that where used for the conversion. the "nose" area shows a too much pronounced down curve. giving the front area a bad "droop"...

Yes,I've seen that too

It's the Airdoc conv.set, which is considered the best, there are 2 builds with it

at that forum, the build photos are long gone unfortunately

That would be a QRC-490 chaff dispenser pod.

Right! But still missing as a resin AM part. I already asked Andreas Klein and Ra'anan Weiss about it and suggested them to make one...let's hope.

could that be lens distortion making it look drooped where it is not? the AirDoc nose does not seem to droop

from the angle down of the air conditioning system intakes, i can tell that the resin bit was positionnel slightly too much downward.

also, something interesting, on the 492 bird, there is a syrian kill roundel (portside), and on bird496, there is an Iraqi kill marking.

would a recon aircraft wear kill marking for specific mission? ...or did they ever got a real kill... in their previous life, when they where F-4E in the IDF/AF ??

498 (previously 146 / 490) got a maneuvering kill against a Irak Mig-21 on 22Mar82 (also documented as 03Jan82!?).

492 (ex 163) did a Mig on 21Oct73.

499 (ex 167? / 493) Can't find any records on this one, have to dig some deeper in my database.. Not really sure though this actually was 167...

AFAIK, this claim was issued during a mission flown over Western Iraq on 4 January 1981. According to Israeli sources, Iraqi MiG-21 was scrambled to intercept, and then run out of fuel while chasing the F-4E(S).

'Problem': that claim is based on intercepted Iraqi radio emissions. The Iraqi pilot was critically short on fuel, and he declared emergency - but landed safely. (Source: IrAF pilot that flew that mission.)

BTW, according to same source, that was second Israeli recce mission over Iraq: the first was flown in September 1980, by a Firebee UAV - that was shot down by SA-6s south-east of Baghdad.

Actually there was never 496(there was-but a regular RF).As you can see-it's a sticker, and the planes never operated with

Orange tails. It was done at the museum for some sqn's selebration, the actual # is 498

Look at the first 8 pics at my wa-that's the original.Taken at 2004,have later ones from 2006-

there's the orange change

http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/isaac_gershman/f-4es_498/

Both 498 and 492 shared a "kill" of an Iraqi Mig-21,mentioned above(Daniel-there's no material about 492 Mig at '73.

That's the story, can read a translation of Airdoc article here,

the back to English translation is bad enough, can see a quote about typical loadout

Pave Spike laser designator pod. Only used on their regular F-4E's. You can find them in the Hasegawa weapon sets in both 1/72 and 1/48, Isracast did one in 1/32.
