echolmberg
My brother-in-law was a Phantom Phixer in the early 1980s working most specifically with their engines. He's willing to purchase a kit which has a complete J79 so I'm wondering how do the J79s in the Italeri F-104 and the Hasegawa F-104 compare? I know that the 1/32 Revell F-4 Phantom has a J79 but, from what I've read, it's not the best representation of one. Is there another 1/32 kit out there that carries a complete J79? Thanks! Aigore
I think either would do, but you'd still benefit from aftermarket exhaust and flame holder and there is no way around scratch building if you want to make a realistic representation.
Dave Williams
Of the two 104 kits, the Italeri J79 is more detailed than the Hasegawa one.
echolmberg
Yep, scratch-building would definitely be in order to some degree. The kit engines look pretty good but then you look at a picture of the real thing and you realize "Holy cow! I've got to add a lot more plumbing and do-dads to this thing." But at least it's a good start. Dave, thanks for the info regarding the Italeri engine. The more detail, the better. All the less for me to scratch. Eric
nickdanger
The nice thing about the Italeri is that you can take the engine and still have a complete model. I didn't do any additions but it seems like a good base to detail from: Edited March 18, 2016 by nickdanger
