mhorina
What brand to use to paint a P-40E, not water based, in 41overall.
Hal Marshman Sr
I like Model Master OD, with just a wee drop of red to brown it out some. Colorcoats OD 41 is also nice, but somewhat dark for some folks' taste.
mhorina
Hal, Thank you. I have a fresh, sealed, bottle of AeroMaster 9040 US Olive Drab 41 ANA 613. While it sprayed great, it is too green. I'll try adding some red. Thanks again. Mike
PFlint
Tamiya's XF-62 Dark Olive Drab # 41 is alcohol-based. off the top of my head I can't remember the other matches for OD41 - most are discontinued.
mhorina
PFlint Thanks, maybe I'll get that. I use Lacquer thinner with Tamiya flats. Mike

DonSS3
I like Xtracolour also. Their Faded OD looks pretty good for some purposes, too. I think Humbrol's version is way too dark, unless you're doing a factory fresh finish, I guess.
mhorina
Don, Thanks for chiming in. Humbrol is ifie, Xtracolour I have never used. Mike
DonSS3
I really like Xtracolour. I think the colors themselves are very good. Airbrushed (properly thinned) they cover very nicely and I often brush paint mine and generally get a smooth finish. Most of their colors are glossy (I think US Interior Green and RLM 02 can be had in gloss or matte), so the application of decals can be done without having to add that extra gloss coat you need for flat paints. HistnScale
Mike, Give the aeromaster paint a couple of weeks to cure. I've found that it tends to brown up as it ages. HTH, Dave
mhorina
Dave, Thank you for that. I have added some red to the AeroMaster. And while it has darkened, it still looks too green to my eye. Actually you have made a good point. I have painted the fuselage where the windows will go. And each side has been painted a little red on 1 side and a with a little more red on the other side. I will wait awhile and compare them. Right now they still look too green, but are darker than the original. Thanks again to all that have responded. Mike
seawinder
I used Mr. Color No 12 Olive Drab I for a P-38 and thought it a very good match for #41.
PFlint
OD 41 viewed or photographed indoors under artificial light will appear greenish. :( take it outdoors and view it in natural daylight - if it still looks green it's not right. (it should look khaki/brownish when lit by the sun.)

Love that paint but hate the smell. I use it only when I can open the windows. Will keep it in mind. Mike
