Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Does anyone here know, is this sheet for the VF-161 Phantom supposed to be a light ghost gray bird, or a light gull gray bird? http://www.ebay.com/itm/OOP-CAM-DECAL-1-48-SCALE-48-124-F-4S-VF-303-VF-161-/231104021710?hash=item35cedf84ce:m:mcXToxxX-RU1RDRgzzaMVEw Thanks! phantom
I have the sheet. The instructions say 36440. Which I kind of doubt is correct.
DONG
I have the 1/32 CAM sheet of those markings and it says 36440 as well.
Darren Roberts
Light Gull Gray
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Thanks folks! Dang, but those are good-looking Phantoms...I've sometimes wondered what a VF-161 Tomcat would've looked like.
Skull Leader
Thanks folks! Dang, but those are good-looking Phantoms...I've sometimes wondered what a VF-161 Tomcat would've looked like. :rolleyes:/> They went to F/A-18As and were disbanded as part of the ill-fated Air Wing 10 in the mid 1980s... a sad fate for such a storied squadron! (and yeah, a Chargers Tomcat would've looked cool)

Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
 Wow...I'm finding their Hornet markings to be quite the anticlimax....
Darren Roberts
:blink:/> Wow...I'm finding their Hornet markings to be quite the anticlimax.... They are rather...vanilla, aren't they? They remind of the Marine squadron (Thunderbolts). That's just about all they had as well.
Darren Roberts
Actually, we do kind of know what -161's markings would have looked like on Tomcats. I bet they would have been something like this. :rolleyes:/> https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj539WYtPrMAhUJRVIKHXRuAqIQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.anft.net%2Ff-14%2Ff14-photo-vf194-04xl.htm&bvm=bv.122676328,d.amc&psig=AFQjCNGJ9OsFZ0-v5_6NrBBqvuovfM0lzQ&ust=1464443636778710 Edited May 27, 2016 by Darren Roberts
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Similar, yes...but still not quite "Charger-esque" :)
Rex
Except they would have been painted on in a Gray that almost disappears into the base paint. lol
Darren Roberts
Except they would have been painted on in a Gray that almost disappears into the base paint. lol Isn't that the truth! I may just have to do a "Whif" of VF-161 in Tomcats.
Rex
Now you got me laughing. Not at your whif idea, that would be cool. I just got to thinking about the original paint reg for the colors. The "7 inches from the top of the fin and the prop spinner" part. For some reason, I got thinking about the TPS days,,,,,,with 100 being 36375, 200 being 36495, etc,,,,,we'd be glad to see 700 with 35237, because that would be "so colorful" on an E-2, lol. And hi viz VA-156 Phantoms, hi viz VMFA-323 Tomcats, etc, etc. (I'm glad that Andrew already got his answer, or else I wouldn't have typed this stuff here) Edited May 27, 2016 by Rex

Each squadron getting a gray instead of a color. Uh oh, now you got me thinking! :D
Rex
oh geeez "modeling world, I would like to apologize for encouraging this guy in public" And yeah, it would be cool,,,,,,and you could probably use all the models later, just by repainting that area. It is a very small item,,,,,,,,I wonder how the Navy expected anyone to see that 7" stripe at a glance, anyway?
Skull Leader
yeah, 161 wasn't in hornets long enough to establish a color jet... and I don't even think the hornets were in the business of color jets while they existed.
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Okay, next question. What shade is the dark gray on the tails and the canopy/anti-glare? I'm guessing 36118 (Gunship Gray)? Doesn't quite look like 36081, but I've been wrong before. Funny thing about the CAM decals instructions, they do specify 36440 for the light gray, but no mention at all for the darker gray. Except to say "Dark Gray." j-basset
Andrew, I did some research on VF-161 F-4S sometime back. After looking at various photos, I'm quite sure that the anti-glare panel is FS 35237 - same as the tail and the rest of the markings. I do not believe that it is either FS 36118 or FS 36081, although FS 36118 suitably weathered probably would be pretty close. Regards, (edited to correct typo) Edited June 1, 2016 by j-basset
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Wow....yes...yes, I can see that now. 35237, I think you're right! Thank you so much!
