OT..Any Ford Fusion owners. Thoughts

Recommended Posts

Thinking of buying a New or Used 2015,2016 Fusion and wanted some feedback good and bad. It's been a LONG time since I owned a Ford. I always wind up with Honda cars. This time I went and checked them out and while the 2014-2016 Accords look GREAT on the outside the interior is just not to my liking...Honest for me it SUCKS...Anyway I like the Ford and wanted honest feedback so If you have one PLMK how your experience has been.

Thanks

My father in law drives one....he likes it. But he trades them in before the warranty expires. This time he's actually looking at a Toyota Rav4. Trade in value on his fusion sucks.....where as the Japanese vehicles do hold their value.

I drive a Toyota Highlander and love it. This is my first foreign built vehicle I've owned. I have driven vehicles from all the big 3.....they were nice.....but the Toyota is better. Service and maintenance wise.

Your options are good even if you look at Mazda/Nissan/Toyota /Mitsubishi.

I've got a 2014 Fusion, my company car. Good reliable transport for the most part. Had a transmission seal go at 16K (not exactly confidence inspiring, but 100% warrantied.) Had a recall for corroding steering-box bolts, so if you live where they salt the roads, or are coastal, get that checked. The Sync system is buggy, but I don't use it alot, so that's not a major PITA.

My last four personal cars were all Japanese; Nissans and Hondas, all of which exceeded 120K miles without major breakdowns. So far I'd say the Fusion is as well built and reliable as my Altima and Maxima were.

I've got a 2009 Fusion that I bought brand new. It has been a really good car. I just turned 105K miles on it. The only problems I've had was a wheel bearing going out and an airbag sensor that had to be replaced.

I would buy another Fusion without any qualms.

Probably not much help but I've got a friend with one and he said it's the worst ride he's ever had. In two years, it stranded him twice and was in the shop for a couple of other significant repairs. All under warranty but still......

We were thinking about getting a 2016 but after his story, we opted for a new Honda Civic. Love it!

We have 3 2014's and 1 2015 at work. All 3 of the 14's have been in the shop more than I have ever seen any new car. The 3 14's have been in the shop for months at different times waiting on automatic clutches due to a recall. In my opinion I would go with something different. The Fusion is just the old Escorts in new skin and different name.

a few people at work have 2014-16s and they like them and say they don't have any issues with them. My wife was looking for a new car to replace the Altima we had to turn in. She ended up taking her Mother's old Altima cause it was free but was seriously considering Fusion.

Thanks but what on the 15 has it been a "shop queen"... I am worried as I use to work for Jeep Chrysler in the service dept. With those It was like tossing a coin as to which cars were gonna be trouble free or spend half their life in the shop. I could never understand that 2 cars rolling off the same assembly line and one is in only for regular maintenance the other was there for everything you could imagine..Now I have read where the 15's and 16's Fusions have been significantly improved in the Transmission area.... I may go hang at the dealer by the Shop and quiz people as they drive up...or hang in the waiting room... do a poll or something..

Thanks Guys...

Wife has a bought-new 2014 Fusion SE w/1.5 litre eco-boost (read turbo) motor. Scats like crazy when the boost comes on, and gets around 30 actual mpg on long trips with 4-5 people aboard and full luggage. Around 23mpg in start/stop traffic around town and ZERO PROBLEMS for 18 months. Driven daily.

The backup camera is very wide angle and has predictive steering, not just a rear view with some lines. The only odd thing is the voice control driving directions app, which does strange things like sending me to a "Hair Parlor rather than Harrah's Casino in Mobile, Ala.

My son has a 2015 Toyota with similar features, but it did cost less, which does show when you compare the two.

Fords are like any other brand, you get a percentage of well built cars and a percentage of ones not quite so well built. Chances are good you will probably end up with one which is well built, but I admit their build quality was a touch better back in 2001-2005.

Big thing to keep in mind about Eco-boost if you get one so equipped, it is a turbo-charger. That means you HAVE to run premium gas in the car. Sure, you potentially get better fuel mileage in some regimes, but tromp on it and it will suck the fuel tank dry quicker. If you go for one without Eco-boost, it means you can burn anything from ethanol to premium, saving you at the pump. Also I wouldn't worry about getting anything with E85 Ethanol capability either (not sure the Fusion has that, but I've seen it on some Focus and Fiesta models) as fuel mileage on that stuff sucks and your oil change interval is higher due to what the alcohol based fuel can do to the oil seals versus petroleum (meaning a 3000 mile interval versus 10,000 if we are talking synthetic oil, which is what most factory cars use these days).

I could also say "Check out the Toyota Camry" but I have a feeling by this stage you probably already have done so and have narrowed down the choices. If you haven't though, look into it as even an LE model Camry with a 2.5L 4 cylinder engine is good strong performer. Tromp on the gas and that thing will move without a turbo charger and Toyotas do a very good job of hitting their MPG targets if not bettering them. Chances are the Ford likely has a better sound system though as that is the one thing I really loved about my 2001 Focus.

Not so! Do a little research on it and you'll find Ford built the ecoboost to run on anything between 85-93 octane, just steer clear of E85 and I personally don't use any gas with ethanol in it with my Ecoboost truck. I've owned older turbo, supercharged, and high compression ratio cars and trucks so I know where you're coming from, but these newer little Ford engines aren't like the days of old.

I've got a 2008 Fusion with almost 84K on it, and I absolutely love it. I got it fully loaded w/ SYNC system, and I subscribe to SiriusXM radio, which I would go through serious withdrawals if I ever lost that. The only issue I ever had with it was something in the on the driver side door took a crap on me, meaning I had to roll the window down and use the outside handle to open up the driver door that way until I got it fixed. But it was a pretty cheap fix. Oh, and my driver side mirror seems to be cursed. It's been knocked off twice. Once was vandalism and once it got sheared off by somebody who thought they could make a U-turn with my car parked right there, but apparently...um...missed.

I have owned two Fusions and have zero complaints. Reliable, good on gas, smooth comfortable ride, great sound system, good power for the class of car, good safety features. I'd buy one again without a moments pause but we needed something bigger so now we drive an Explorer and Escape. If I had a gripe it would be that backing a Fusion up can be tricky as the mirrors are not much help and it sits tail high when viewed from the inside so using the rear window to help doesn't really do much. Minor gripe but a gripe nonetheless. Ford is a good company and IMHO the best of the American "big three".

Honestly, you can ask opinions about any car from any car manufacturer and odds are you will get most people saying good things about it with a few posting horror stories. Doesn't matter which car or car company, they all produce cars every now and again that are duds and garage queens.

Good luck!

Agreed I won't even look at Chrysler or GM Product. They say that The Chevy Malibu is a Top Performer reliability wise but I then wonder who they paid off to get that rating.I saw the same on the EcoBoost turbos that they are designed to run fine on 87 octane. and the 2.0L one actually gets a +1mpg bump with 89/93 octane. not worth the extra at the pump for me. If I get one it would be the EcoBoost engine as the 2.5L normally aspirated engine was a dog compared to my Honda with 177 HP rating.

I have a 2014, and the only problem I have with it is that it is a little small interior-wise. I'm 6'1" tall and 300 pounds, and I have to have the seat all the way down and all the way back to drive it. But the car itself has been great so far...We've had it for about 3 months now. We bought the 7 year/100,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty on it, so if something should happen, we are covered. I like the safety features on it, I like the sound system, and I like the fact that when I hit the gas...it GOES! Pretty decent power for the engine size. It handles very well. Gas mileage is not great, but not horrible either. My 1996 Mazda Protege got 32 a gallon...The Fusion has been at about 24-26.

Since everyone said the new Mustang looked like a Fusion when it was introduced, does that count? LOL!! Funny thing is, I almost pulled the trigger on a new Accord V6 2 years ago. But for the same money (or real close) I bought a 2015 GT with 435 HP and I could get it in Blue with a manual trans. Honda only offered the V6 with a manual in gray, red or black. WTF Honda? You lost a sale right there!

Thanks for the clarification. Best way to verify I guess is to read the owners manual and pop the gas cap cover to see what it says. If they have indeed gone with lower compression motors in the cars with Eco-boost, that is a very good thing. The higher the octane, naturally the better it runs.

I also avoid ethanol when I can, which is difficult to do in a state where the stuff is subsidized and almost every gas pump in the state pumps it in regular and plus grades (leaving premium as the only ethanol free grade). Thankfully I have a station I can go to on a regular basis that has ethanol free regular gas. I know running the stuff isn't a problem like days of old, but your fuel mileage goes down by about 5 to 10%. So what good is saving a few cents at the pump when you're just going to end up having to fill up more often?

As for manuals, they are indeed becoming a dying breed. I ended up going with a manual Scion tC for my current car because it was about the only thing in the budget Toyota line that had any balls. Yes, I know they also have the FRS which is a nice GT car with a great Subaru boxer motor. But living in Nebraska, front wheel drive is almost a requirement for the winter months and I like the larger cabin and good cargo space. It has the same 2.5L engine as a Camry and that motor is practically bullet proof.

Sure there is also a manual Corolla and the Scion iM (to be known in 2017 as the Corolla iM as Scion goes away as a division), but it is only a 1.8L and Toyota's gear ratios aren't great as they spaced them pretty wide, so you really have to rev that motor before a shift. With the tC I can keep the revs in the low to mid range and the exhaust note sounds a lot better. Plus, with 179 horses under the hood, it isn't a slug. It is a pity that the tC goes away at the end of this year because it was Scion's best selling car and it has a nice set of features that are becoming tough to find on manuals these days.
