Drifterdon
Great recovery on the vertical stab. I'll be watching this one. :thumbsup:/>
Vidar_710
Working on the tone of a natural Aluminum finish. I used 4 shades of Alclad Aluminum. Top Bottom I'm real happy with how it's going so far. Now to "successfully" tape off everything to shoot the Gloss White on the upper fuselage. Scenes-n-film at 11! Trojan Thunder
Nice recovery Tracy, so by the paint booth shot of the engines I gather you are doing a UPS bird? You certainly have a neat way of painting and masking all those different colours.
Vidar_710
Real happy with how the paint is coming so far. Here the Gloss White is down and the maskings have been removed. I'll give the Gloss White at least 24hrs before I wet sand it with 8000, then 12,000 grit polishing cloths to ensure there is no orange peel and raised paint from masking is removed. mrblujet
Nice job on the model. What brand of paint did you use for the gloss white?
Vidar_710
Testors Insignia White was used for the finish, thinned 40% paint 60% Mr. Color's Leveling Thinner. I de-canted and airbrushed Tamiya's Fine White Primer for the base coat. Tracy Edited June 23, 2016 by Vidar_710
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Boy, that's enough to make one's mouth just water...I'm impressed!
GEH737
Airliners... White and silver... I hate those combinations - and you sure made it look easy. I imagine (sometimes) that doing the wings separate - then blending them into the fuselage would be a bit easier. It looks like you did the white first completely - then the silvers? The end result is really well done :) Hitch
Vidar_710
No sir... I did the metal finish first. ;-) Tracy
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Looks just like the 8's that I watched as a kid out at Logan International in Boston as a kid. Nothing else like 'em!
jager
I am watching this build as it is a plane I spent some of my working career on, here in Tulsa, Oklahoma at Air Force Plant3 which was operated by McDonnell Douglas. We did the initial modifications/upgrades that made a -61 into -71. We incorporated the CFM56 engines, new environmental systems and brake systems. During those mods were also did structural repairs and upgrades. Later in the program we built kits that were utilized by Delta for them to do their mods in Atlanta. One thing that can be said about the DC8, no two are the same. During the initial production in Long Beach, these plane were 'coerced' to go together. None of that CAD/CAM technology then. Jay Chladek
Wow, this is looking VERY good. Dare I say it looks inspirational.
Vidar_710
Some of the decals are being separated from the main sheet so they can be sprayed a dullcoat finish. They are trimmed right to the edge of the graphics to prevent silvering. This retains the luster of the metal finish, and renders the flat characteristics of the surrounding panel detail provided with the Delta versions livery. Getting sprayed. more coming! Vidar_710
CFM engines are complete... save the lil' Delta widget on the cowls. Dullcoated decals in place on the pylons... ...and in the intakes Getting ready to start slashing into the decal sheet once I confirm no finish issues with the dull coated decals. Drifterdon
Tracy Those look fantastic. Did you use a wash to bring out the detail of the blades?
Vidar_710
yes. Black water color. But I think I'll go back to oils in the future. They are "creamier" and feather better. Water color doesn't feather on a hard surface like they do on paper or canvas. Tracy
Drifterdon
Thanks. That's just what I've been trying to find out. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see the finished builds. I'm still marveling at the resin tail you made. :thumbsup:/>

Vidar_710
The engines are now all done! Widgets are on. I figured the Tail Widget was going to be a pain in the arse due to the contours of the rudder. As the decal settled, the sharper details began shredding it as it pulled down into the recesses. Testors Red with gradual additions of White to match the spare decal from a second kit. The Blue required a significant amount of Black to get it to the right shade. Here are the test dots next to the graphic. Real happy with the results! I plan to shoot a light coat of very thin semi-gloss to unify the finish. Tracy
