anvil6
Worked a bit more on the instrument panel tonight. I will be drilling tiny holes with my pin vise and stuffing some wire in them next... -Ramon
anvil6
I have made some progress since the forums crashed. I finished the cockpit wiring, then moved on to the cabin area. i will update in small bites...   -Ramon
anvil6
I was originally going to leave the ramp section as it came, but the dude that I am building this for spent a lot of time back there so I had to make it a bit better...          more to follow...  -Ramon  Edited October 17, 2016 by anvil6

anvil6
Simulate, not duplicate... I wasn't trying to make it EXACTLY like the real thing, but I wanted to make it look busy enough and incorporate enough key items to make it pass for something more realistic:  After painting and weathering, it was tiem to do it all over again on the other side:        nearly finished with the cabin, but I had a few more OCD itches to scratch...  -Ramon

anvil6
Before I could button up the interior pieces, I had to add the interior decals and scratch build a few more items. Knowing not much inside would be visible once complete, I painted the troop seats as they came in the box, with molded on seatbelts. Good from afar but far from good.   A gun mount needed to be fabricated for the left gunners window, so I made one of those using stock sheet plastic, and stock plastic rod. I also pilfered some M60Ds and mounts from my spares box. I installed the pintle mount on the cross beam; the weapon can go in after painting and decaling.   next I decaled the interior and painted some yellow stripes on the cabin floor. I used Vallejo model air yellow and as much as I love the rest of their color line, I have yet to find an acrylic yellow that covers like an enamel. I guess I wont be completely phasing out my old Testors paints after all.  Lastly, I had to install window rails on the forward cabin wall. The right hand gunners window opens by being slid up and secured on the cabin ceiling with rails and rollers. More stock plastic to the rescue! I scraped off the paint and pre-bent the plastic to have a slight curve, then Tamiya extra thin cement secured the pieces firmly in place.     For anyone else building one of these - the instructions would have you mount the window to the cabin ceiling as if it hinged along the top edge, showing the outer green side of the window. This is incorrect. You should only be able to see the inside of the window when it is open.  This catches us up to now. I think tonight I will glue the fuselage together...  -Ramon
anvil6
ok, so I finally got the fuselage halves glued together, but I had a few more details to add. First, I scratch built the roller that attaches the window to the rails on the forward cabin wall.   Next, I drilled out the plastic where the heater vent was, between the cockpit and gunners window, and I replaced it with stock photoetch mesh.    Here is a shot of the interior with the gunners window installed in the open position. I think having the rails and roller there makes a big difference compared to the lack of detail that the kit parts came as.   And here it is glued, taped and bound together. Italeri sure does make you work for a nice model. This will be an opportunity to try out Perfect Plastic Putty. Once all that is cleaned up, then its on to my favourite part of the build: painting and finishing!   Cheers!  -Ramon

Eastern
This one is amazing super detailed build! But how about riveting lines on the outer shell? I think they would bring much zest to the build.  Cheers and happy modeling! Alexander

Alexander   Thanks Alexander! You are right, some rivet detail would add some more coolness to the finished model. Now I have to decide if it would be better to add raised rivet details such as Archers rivet decals, or to take some artistic license and use a pounce wheel to make rivet lines. It would be faster and more within budget, but raised rivets would be more realistic... decisions decisions!  -Ramon
anvil6
filling and sanding, filling and sanding. At this point I am not too impressed with Italeri's half hearted tooling and engineering... Like others who have built this before me, I encountered a sucky fit of engine nacelles to fuselage... Perfect Plastic Putty to the rescue! This bottom part was pretty bad. Knowing what I know know, I should have shimmed the fuselage sides with stock plastic to level off the two halves and the fuselage bottom.   thats it for now. The next update will be after all this sanding and polishing is over with.  -Ramon
