Tu-160, white swan

Recommended Posts

Holiday is over, and I'm still waiting for an outstanding (placed in february...) order for my Su-34... sigh...

Just wish that Advanced Modeling would sent the parts to that shop

So what to do, another gem from the stash, the Tu-160 from Trumpeter in 1:144...

So far I cleaned up most of the parts, and started painting the cockpit and wheelbays

didn't had a lot of modeling time lately, but managed to do some work:

basic painting of the main gear legs

with some wash

Need to attach the plates that close the opening at the hull, these are missing in the kit

A lot of noseweight is necessary to avoid a tailsitter, more nuts can be found under the cockpit

Paint is on... now the details around the engines:

tried some shading of the panels with light brown, lightgrey and grey, seems in the end that only the grey had some effect...

Anybody has some ideas of how to add some different shading to the panels afterwards?

thx, I have a few questions for some guy's with more knowledge about this plane than I have. On the painting instructions, the aircraft is completely white, on most there is a dark metal surface in front of the engines:

Tupolev Tu-160 Blackjack

are there aircraft without this "unpainted" metal parts?

What would be an appropriate color for the discolorisation on the swing-wing mechanism at the base of the wings?

UIf you mean the leading edges of big centroplane - it is not metal, it is RWRs, which painted in milk white, not so bright like main painting. This paint looking like dirty white.

If you talking about small dark metal casing plate just near engines hatches - it can be white too, not only metal.

Yes, you are right in all quesions, big engine hatches always dark metal, small usual painted in white, but metal is offer, that white - in this place part of wing, which standing verically in maximum sweep position is adjoins closely to this closing plate. BTW ring-type hatch in front of exaust is darker, than main big area casing.

too bad Trumpeter didn't mirror this decal, so they provide the same one for left and right. I tried to fix it with some creative cutting and pasting...

and an overview from atop. Hinges are painted with a mix of english uniform, dek tan and white. Some panels are handbrushed with white, offwhite, ivory white and Ivory white and english uniform (border of the the square panels in the wingroot...)

and below (still need to paint the below bare metal surfaces and do some retouches where the metal went under the tape...):
