1/350 Alfa, Akula & Los Angeles Class

Recommended Posts

I was trying to thin the stash count so I figured I'll do these 3 at the same time.

This will be my first time building submarines.

The box contents

Slide molds feature on all 3 but they don't really line up necessitating some cleanup.

Some putty needed along the seams. Nothing some elbow grease can't fix.

Otherwise the builds are relatively straight forward.

All 3 done, ready for paint.

Painted and decaled.

The Riich Models decals on the LA class were very thick.
Thankfully, there weren't too many of them.

The Hobby Boss ones on the Russian subs were nice.

Coating and weathering next.

Thanks for looking.

I thought I'd give weathering with oil paints a go.

I must say it looks a bit scary at this point.

Leap of faith eh? Just do it.

Turned out okay I guess.

One down, 2 to go.

Looks nice. Still haven't been willing to try weathering myself. Gonna do it with TIRU though. D Bellis is going to give some mentoring.

Thanks for dropping by Dave.
I was worried about ruining the work I have put in but after seeing some of the great results here, I decided to take a leap of faith.

I protected the work with a coat of gloss. Then I used a matt coat so the oils would have something to stick to.
Both coats were Tamiya acrylics.

Oils were applied and streaked with sponge slightly moistened with turpentine.
It did not affect the acrylic coats in the least. Add and remove the weathering oils as you would like.
I'm happy I gave it a go even if my results are so so. I guess it is another trick that I can apply / improve on.

There are plenty of videos showing the technique available on youtube.

First two complete.
I'm happy with how the Alfa turned out.

For the LA Class, I did the same oil weathering as the Alfa but I wanted it a little cleaner.

It looks like I overdid the cleaning because whatever oil weathering left faded significantly under the matt coat.

Too clean now.

I guess I can go always back add more weathering but for now, I'm ready to move on.

Live and learn eh?

Last one to go!

The last of the 3 done.
Since I underdid the weathering for the LA class, I went over the top for the Akula.

nice trio, weathering is good (last one seems best ;-))

Thanks Silenoz,

I think I'm slowly getting the hang of things.

Need a whole load more practice!
