twong
Found this photo online and saw that the F-4B has WW2 bombs on the inboard TER's. Does anyone know if these are the same type as found in the Monogram 1/48 F9F-5 and Trumpeter 1/48 F9F-2 kits? Are they the smaller bombs supplied in those kits? Can those be used on the F-4B if I want to model one with a similar load? Edited October 22, 2016 by twong
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
I'm not a bomb expert, but, any chance those are actually just practice bombs?

There is a similar photo in the Squadron/Signal USMC Phantoms in combat on page 9. The caption says they are WW2 bombs being used due to short supply of Mk.80 series bombs. The photos were taken in Vietnam.
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Ah! Fair enough. Glad to know.
twong
The photo I found online that I posted above nor the book says what type of WW2 bombs but they look close to the ones in the Monogram and Trumpeter F9F kits though. Looks like the rectangular part between the fins are missing though in the above photo. If they are the same, it would be a different load than what you see with all the Mk.82's. onosendai
It seems too small to be the WWII 250lb, maybe a 100lb with unknow fin.
Finn
Due to a bomb shortage of the Mk-80 series bombs they had to dig into old stocks, the ones in the pic look like they are about 100lb with conical tails that came out after the Korea war. The bomb body was probably left over from WW II while the tail section are a little newer. Here is another F-4B with the older bombs: Jari
Finn
Here is a large file, 58.9MB: http://www.talpo.it/files/tm-9-1325-200-bombs-and-bomb-components-usa-1966-329-pag.pdf on various US bombs and components from that time period. It looks like the top pic shows the M135 conical tail section that was added to a bomb body. Jari
twong
Thanks Jari, very useful info. Thanks Onosendai. Link to my sale/trade list. http://www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?/topic/283315-fs-148-and-more-no-paypal/#comment-2698728 Does anyone have the smaller 250lb bombs as spares from the Monogram and or Trumpeter 1/48 F9F Panther kits they would like to trade for? I could use a least 12 of them. Also, does anyone have any of the 100lb bombs from the Accurate Miniatures WWII Armament set they aren't using? I could use all 8 or more if they can spare them. Finn
Here is a F-8E with the older bombs: Jari
twong
Thanks Jari! I have seen that F-8 photo already. I found it when I was researching my Monogram 1/48 F-8E build in those same squadron markings. I loaded mine with Mk.82 slicks though as I couldn't find any of those WWII style bombs. I have been searching and no one makes those particular bombs. I am going to try to use some WWII bombs and modify them somehow for my F-4B build. Here is my Monogram 1/48 F-8E. The engine duct bay I think was from the old KMC set. The Cockpit is from True Details. The Zunis are from the Hasegawa kit. The bombs and MER's are from the Monogram A-4E. Decals are a mix of Superscale and kit ones.
Drifterdon
The Tamiya A-1H Skyraider in 1/48 comes with a load of these bombs or something very similar. The fins might have to be modified a bit but they are small enough. Here is a link showing them. http://www.cybermodeler.com/hobby/kits/tam/images/tam_61073_parts4.jpg
