Airfix 1:48 Scale Defiant

Recommended Posts

My seventh, and probably last finished modeling project for 2016. This is the Airfix Defiant in 1:48 scale. It is a pretty nice kit. Generally trouble-free fit, great detail, many options (gear positions, open or closed canopy, open or closed turret, raised or lowered turret fairings, and parts needed to build AI equipped MK.II), and great fun to build. The only shortcoming is the clear parts. Airfix still can't seem to figure out that in cross-section, clear part frames work better if they have squared, not round edges. The frames are not as bad as on the 1:72 scale Defiant, but some are still very difficult to spot and mask.

I added Eduard photoetched belts, drilled out the gun tubes and exhaust stubs, but otherwise the kit is box-standard. Paints used, were a mix of Tamiya and Vallejo. Tamiya colors include cockpit green interior, mixed NATO black and neutral gray for gun turret interior, sky undersides, silver leaf spray landing gear legs, tire black..tires, white spinner, mixed tire black/medium gray prop, gun turret framing, and guns (with powdered graphite rubbed on later), yellow prop tips.; Vallejo was used for the camouflage: German Brown primer, British uniform for the brown, and a mix of bronze green and black for the dark green. No particular reason for the latter mix, I just happened to have it on hand, and didn't want to spend money on a bottle of Tamiya dark green.

Weathering done largely with artist's oils and a silver Prismacolor pencil.

I took the photos outdoors under natural light. Hope they show up well

And together with Airfix's 1:72 Defiant, which I finished earlier this year.

Nice!

I just picked this up at the LHS, so I'm particularly interested in learning about the build. Hope mine turns out as nicely as yours.
