RKic
Hi all, I'm considering getting one of those Ikea Detolf glass cases, and I was exploring costs for extra shelves. A custom glass installation business I called said that cutting 4 sheets of tempered glass to the appropriate size will cost $172.00! :o Is this average, or am I looking at the wrong kind of business? deadmeat
That is grossly high. I just priced some identical sheets for the same case at a local Ace Hardware and it came to about $10.00/sheet.
RKic
Holy cow! I dont know if my local Ace does glass cutting, but thanks for the heads-up. I'll have to poke around some more.
speedlimit
I found a similar thick glass at Lowe's and have them cut glass of the same size as the ones from Ikea. Had them cut 12 pieces and cost $7.00 a pc. Eric
airmechaja
The key words here are "tempered glass". You don't have to use tempered glass. It is stronger but you just have to use some caution with other glass.
skyhawk174
For model shelves I don't think you need the glass to be tempered. Tempered glass is expensive probably due to the post process after cutting to shape. If the glass shelves break it should be contained in the cabinet. My model cabinet came with only two shelves and now I have 6 in it. It started out as a china cabinet that I added the shelves to. I got lucky and got the glass free from a friend who had a bunch of aluminum framed windows he had replaced with new ones. I simply took them to the glass shop and they cut them to size. They were not tempered.
