Russian planes in Syria.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

As far as I could gather, during their deployment in Syria (at least during the early stage), Russian planes (Su-24, Su-25, Su-30,...) had their red stars and VVS ROSSII markings painted over.

Yet, there are some pictures showing the markings repainted over the paint patches.

Is there a timeframe that would match the changes? Or did the Russians simply repaint the markings before the planes flew back to Russia? In which case, a corollary question would be: are all current russian planes deployed in Syria devoid of red stars and VVS markings?

Thanks,

Thomas

When the planes arrived in Syria, the identifying markings - VVS code, russian stars, RF codes - were all painted over hastily painted over. Whether this was done to hide the fact from media that they were Russian planes or done to protect the crew's identities, I'm am not sure about.

Later after the operation became more public and Russian media was allowed to report on the operations at the base, they were painted back.

Some of the aircraft even carried pretty extensive mission boards closer to the end of the deployment.
