1/48 Hasegawa F-4G Wild Weasel, Clark AB Philippines, 1988

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I am back to share my latest completed project, the 1/48 Hasegawa F-4G Wild Weasel from the original P4 boxing in 1984.  I bought this kit from this site for very cheap, but it was already started though... the forward fuselage was brush painted and the cockpit had been partially painted.  the intakes had been glued, then ripped apart apparently... so I had a little extra work to do when I got started.  This build was OOB except for the decals.  Total build time was about 3.5 weeks.

The Decals are Speed Hunter Graphics "SEAD SPECIALISTS" part one, which are printed by Cartograf and are excellent... with one small exception.  There is an insert sheet that I do not believe is printed by Cartograf that included the "PN" and the upper fuselage "black lines" (really not sure what to call them).  They were a bit trickier to work with than the rest, and the backing color is different.  But overall this is a fantastic sheet.  It is the first time using Speed Hunter decals and I look forward to doing so again.

Here is what I used on this build:

Kit: 1/48 Hasegawa F-4G Wild Weasel P4

Decals: Speed Hunter Graphics "SEAD SPECIALISTS" F-4G Wild Weasel Phantoms, Part I

Aftermarket: None

Paints: Gunze Mr. Surfacer Black 1500 (primer base), Tamiya White Liquid Primer (for pre-shade stippling), Gunze Aqueous H340 Medium Green FS 34102 , H320 Gunship Green FS 34092, and  Insignia Red H327 FS 11136 , Tamiya XF-24 Gray, Smoke, and Rubber Black, and Alclad II Gloss Black Primer, Airframe Aluminum, Aluminum, Pale Burnt Metal, Jet Exhaust, and Burnt Iron. Future Gloss coat for decals and Future+Tamiya XF-21 Flat Base 6:1 ratio for final matte coat. MIG Deep Brown for panel washes.

On to the pics!  I hope you enjoy!

Love the F-4G! I flew through Clark AB from 1975 till Pinatubo blew up. The 3rd TFW had a bunch of E and G's. I have a 90th TFS challenge coin in my collection.

The Phantom always looks good in an inflight display....Sadly the sound of those J-79's are gone but those that heard them will never forget it! Great job on a Phantastic

That is really cool!  Thanks for sharing that.  And thank you for the compliment, it means a lot to me to hear.

I love it!  The Euro 1 scheme on the Phantom has always been my favorite and you nailed it.  Sweet build.

Thanks Steve!  I totally agree on the Euro 1 scheme, love it on the Phantom!

Wow, very striking! The colors, the painting, and overall finish all look awesome. Those in flight poses are very cool also. I am thinking the same Euro I for a future F-4D but this was so exciting that I have been pondering that project now. For the colors, you said  H340 Medium Green FS 34102  and H320 Gunship Green FS 34092. I just wanted to confirm because I thought one of the colors is normally Gunship gray FS 36118. Also, I think I see a 3-tone camo rather than 2. Did you have a third color?

I'm puzzled, man.  I can't understand how you can build and paint so quickly and yet so beautifully.    Do you use a machine that pauses time so you can take your time building and painting?   Your models are just so incredibly realistic.   :gr_eek2:

Thanks for the kind words bud, it is always nice to hear compliments from modellers I find inspiration from.  I do not have such a machine, but it sure would be nice to have one that goes back in time... LOL  I think I build so quickly because of numerous reasons, such as I get a consistent 1-2 hours every night to work, I plan my evenings work in my mind before hitting the bench, and I don't sweat the details sometimes.  I know that is blasphemy, but I definitely have "good enough-itis"  LOL.  Also, I am really not great at construction, seam filling and sanding... BUT, I am pretty good at painting and weathering... and hiding my poor construction.  LOL

Thanks so much for the compliments my friend!  Like I said in my above post, I am humbled to receive such compliments from great modellers.

As for the paints, I did not do a very good job in my description of showing what I used where.  Yes, there are three colors there.  Gunze H340 and 320, but the gray is Tamiya XF-24.  I used the Tamiya gray because when I built my A-10 in Euro 1 awhile back, I did not like the way the Gunze gray looked.  It was too close in hue and darkness to the Gunship Green and was hard to see contrast between the two.  So I looked through my paint inventory and the XF-24 seemed to be what I was looking for.

Here are some pics of my painting and finishing process on this build:

Primed, using Gunze Mr Surfacer Black-

Preshading, using Tamiya Liquid White Primer-

First color applied, Gunze Aqueous H340 Medium Green FS 34102-

Second color applied, Gunze Aqueous H320 Gunship Green FS 34092 -

Third color applied, Tamiya XF-24 Gray. Now this one scared me a little when I applied it.  It is so much flatter than the others, and was lighter than I expected.  However, once I evened the finishes up with a coat of future, I was happy with the color.

Future coat added and most decals applied-

Mig Deep Brown wash added-

Wash removed-

Flat coat applied, loadout completed-

My metalwork process:

Alclad Airframe Aluminum sprayed on all areas to be metal-

Alclad Pale Burnt Metal applied in the panel lines and panel edges-

Alclad Burnt Iron applied to create burnt areas-

Lastly, added Tamiya Rubber Black to give it that "sooty" burnt metal look-

Hope this helps someone looking to replicate anything I have done on my project.  :-)

Thanks for showing us the painting steps!   By the way, how are you able to spray lacquer paint inside the house?   My wife has a bionic nose and will end me if she detects  .0001 ppm of it.

No prob!

LOL In that warm months I open a window, but in the winter I just kinda hope the wife doesn't smell it, since my work area is up in the loft area of our condo.  She hasn't complained yet, (knocks on wood)

Nice pinoy Phantom!

To leave a hint here: to avoid getting a super flat coat when using the Tamiya acrylics I just add a few drops of tamiya gloss clear to the airbrush jar. Later when dry I make a fine wet sanding with micromesh 6000-8000. That removes the pebbles, overspray, dust in the coat and prepares your surface for the clear coat of Future (or similar). By doing this you will not need such a big amount of clear coat to make it shine and also better for decals to give them a real good underground.

Awesome build!  The sooty metal around the burners is just fantastic.  And the whole color treatment and weathering is spot-on.  I'll admit this is also my favorite scheme on the F-4.
