This is a build for a  F-15DJ (F15 doubleseat from the JASDF) in an agressor sheme, a tad more colourfull then a regular F-15:

and with these decals:

met de volgende versies:

I will try to make one of these trainers. Construction should be straightforward, painting...

Basekit is:

Started with joining the main hull. Suctionside of the engines was left unpainted, you can't see it afterwards, not even with a flashlight:

There was a big seam on the wing between these two parts, so I added some thick CA (experiment)

Sanded it flush and did a check with paint:

and more sanding:

only thing remaining is restoring the panellines

Also some progress with the cockpits, no decals were provided, so I made my dials in black paper. Almost complete:

seems flimsy, but in reality it almost this size:

the rear one fell to the floor while taking pictures... looked everywhere, couldn't see it. Move my chair... right on top of it... AARGHH

I've thought to build one with a centre-line pylon an one with two wing pylons. No armament or CFT's, only a sindewinderlike thing without wings (target sensor??) don't know if there are other things to add to these birds?

Great choice of subject, and (again!) demonstrating the charm of the wee scale...

You're probably best doing just the AFT, ACMI pod and maybe a (captive?) AAM-3 like this fella. No idea where you get one in 1/144 though, but maybe a modified early round-nose AIM-9 will look the part.

Watching with interest!

I was thinking about some airframe parts different between the F-15D/DJ and the F-15E that are easily corrected.

Here are some pointers:

f-15dj-mods_zpssoizn5jq.jpg

The red circles are the main landing gear wheel bay covers. They're bulged on the E, but not on the DJ.Sand off the raised portions.

The green circle is the gun clip fairing. Not present on the DJ. Sand off.

Blue arrows point at fairings that should end in points on the DJ, not in the antenna covers of the E

The orange arrow points at the arrestor hook. It's a bit different on the DJ. Also, the DJ has a fairing between the engine nozzles that's not on the F-15E.

Best consult some pictures for better views of the areas surrounding the orange (also a top view) and blue arrows.

Also, the vertical tails on the F-15DJ should both have the slimmer tubular container at the top. The F-15E has a thinner and a thicker container.

Hope this helps. Going by your work on the cockpit, nozzles and air intake ramps, these mods should be fairly easy to do for you.

a little progress:

bangseats are ready:

and mounted in the cockpits:

just saw here one lower belt is missing ... darn

canopy taped:

The green tape is something new... nice to work with, but a little to rigid to be comfortable on this scale...

Now on to the tubular containers on top of the fins...

Which sequence is best for painting, first the camo, and then the metal parts, or vice-versa?

It doesn't go fast, but I've constructed the first AAM-3 rocket for the armarment:

what it looks like:

first I've cut the body from brass rod:
844967927d11275f38b89afa6aac326b.jpg

Next I've made a drawing of the fins to scale and printed them on paper
73a339b6bd88dd057603d056abc87f25.jpg

Next I've glued this on a sheet of styrene, but it was to thick in the end:

So I've printed them again, soacked the paper with thin CA to make it harder and cut the fins out. These were then positioned to the body:

One down, one to go...

  • 3 weeks later...

50 shades of grey... giving you a tint of grey hair somehow...

1 before and 1 after a mistcote with the basepaint (palest color)

and both together, still a bit dark, but I think it is good enough

If you still want to scratchbuild the centerline pylon, you can use this as a template. Print it out at 600 dpi and you will have the right size for 1/144. A good image viewing program (like Irfanview) will let you print at a particular dpi.

Thx for the info. Thinking of one with two outer fuel tanks, and one with one large center fueltank (seems like the same as the first version)

Struggling with the decals somehow... they are small but some break after touching the water, so they become a tiny jigsaw...
