Finn
We have all heard of the MiG killers, but what about the helicopter kills as per this scoreboard: Jari
11bee
Especially interesting since, according to the board, Sparrows were used.
Niels
Checked "..... And kill MiG's" third edition, there is no listing of helo kills during the VietNam war. Also checked http://aces.safarikovi.org/victories/doc/usaf.aerial.victory.credits-vietnam.war-by.name.pdf and there is also no mentioning of helo kills. Also a bit strange in one way that this only shows missile kills, all the time the 366TFW was known as "The Gunfighters" due to large number of gun kills? martin_sam_2000
Could they have been damaged UH-1's that were destroyed to stop them from falling into enemy hands?? as well, the sign says "366 MMS Missle Shop". I figure there was a decent rivalry between these guys and the gun loader guys!! Sean

Sean That is a possibility as there appears to have been something painted over beside the chopper symbols, perhaps Bullpups were used since it was the missile shop. ChesshireCat
just a thought. There were rumors (RVN was a giant rumor mill) that NVA choppers were crossing the 17th Parallel, and there were known NVA choppers flying on the Ho Chi Mein Trail. Yet they also only flew at night. There were even rumors of MIG 21's coming out of Vin and ducking south past the 17th Parallel. Doubt it! There are known ventures south of the Mu Gai Pass, but being as they had to be daylight with Apache Six in constant flight over there; it'd been suicide. Keep in mind, there was almost always Phantoms close by and if not the intercept would have been in the five to six minute area. We always monitored Apache, as he monitored everything out west. You called for a FAC, and he got you one. When we heard his call, it confirmed to the relay. As for smoking choppers, my guess is they were either Yeager shoot downs or caught in the air during a strike up north. Been up and down the Lao border area, and never saw an NVA chopper, and Apache Six would have called it out as soon as it left the ground. gary

Jari That would be a real trick, Bullpups weren't the most accurate things in the world. I'd bet on FFARS before a Bullpup, but as you say, it's the missile shop. It is an interesting question!
