KEB
I have the 1/48 Hasegawa F-4G kit, but I want to build an earlier F-4 Wild Weasel in Southeast camo, 1/48, which kit and what mods and aftermarket do I need to get? thanks for the help
11bee
Don't think you need any mods to the kit. Just appropriate decals. Maybe a different ECM pod?
KEB
how about armament? the earlier WW F-4 seem to not have HARM missiles.
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
That's correct, the HARM didn't come online in any numbers until the early 80's, I think (others here will have a more precise date). So, during the 70's in SEA war paint, they would have carried much of the same as the F-105G's, in the form of AGM-45 Shrikes and AGM-78 STANDARD ARMs. The Shrike is what I seem to have seen more of on the F-4G's, even though the -78 would have been preferred by Weasel crews as a true standoff weapon; the Shrike's range was less than the SAMs' range, meaning having to fly within the deadly range before being able to fire the Shrike. Finn
Here is one in SEA camo with Shrikes: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/6376526 Jari
viper730
AGM-78 were used til the late 80's HTH 88's came about mid 80's
KEB
thanks for all the info guys! were the so did the F-4 WW replace the F-105 WW? were F-4 WW used in Vietnam?
Jim S
Mavericks might be an option too. I found this pick from 1981 during the wraparound era. Though not typical, the G is carrying a Shrike, Harm, Standard ARM, Maverick and a ALQ-119. https://catalog.archives.gov/id/6349701
Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
The F-4G came on to replace the F-105G, but arrived too late for Vietnam. The F-105G only arrived for the last bit of the war. The real workhorse for most of the conflict was the EF-105F, predecessor of the F-105G. There was an attempt to use F-4C's earlier in the war as Weasels, but they were ill-suited to the role. It was recognized that the F-4 would be a good replacement with a LOT more work, totally gutting and redoing the interior, which happened later in the form of the G. Andrew D. the Jolly Rogers guy
Pretty much only the F-16CJ has been the Weasel successor to the F-4G, and yes on Tamiya.
