Sarathi S.
So, I've noticed that SOAR Blackhawks in theater (MH-60L, K, M, all of the above) seem to get their lower ESSS fairings removed, exposing the main landing gear strut. What was the reason for this? I'm assuming weight. Would there be an increased maintenance requirement because you're exposing the oleo to the sand and open air? Or would maintenance be easier since it's not behind a cover?
hawkwrench
I think they probably leave them off because of transportability reasons. Behind those removed fairings are hard points designed for hooking up pull chains for moving the helo on and off USAF birds. Also, the hard points are used when connecting the EWS to the sides of the helo as well. EvilSpyderman would be the man to correctly answer this though! Just my 2 cents worth Tim
HeavyArty
I agree with Tim, it has nothing to do with weight. The covers are just fiberglass and weigh practically nothing. Under them are hard points that allow the helo to be tied down as well as what Tim mentions.
Sarathi S.
So really no reason to keep them on, then.
