Mr Matt Foley
Jake I have a question that sort of applies to the topic. Since I came back to the hobby last fall, I noticed that some tail codes do not necessarily correspond to the previous code. i.e. The "FT" belongs to Moody now? vs. Pope AFB. When did this transpire, and why is it that the Air Force is doing this?
jefropas
It's been a long time Matt. Only sometimes do they coordinate perfectly. Jeff
Niels
FT is short for Flying Tigers, ie 23FW (or are they down to Group?) and the tailcode follows where the unit is stationed. So if the unit is at Moody, then that's were the FT tailcode will be in this case.
Mr Matt Foley
Here I was under the assumption (first mistake) that it was originally marked as "Fayetteville"
Niels
Normally units in the USAF/ANG/AFRC tend to have tailcodes that correspond with the city/state or similar locational identifyer, however some units with great and/or important heritage like the 23FW have gotten permission to have "special" tail code. In this case FT for Flying Tigers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/23d_Fighter_Group
Mr Matt Foley
Ok, I understand now. Thanks for the explanation.
