RKic
Hello, This is my build of Trumpeter's excellent MiG-29. This is the 9.12 version (though they also have the 9.13, 9.15, 9.17, and UB versions available). The kit is beautiful, and generally accurate. I understand the canopy tapers too much in the rear, and there are few other nit picks. Compared to other Trumpeter efforts, these errors are tiny in scale. The kit has great details, and fit is almost perfect. My build is out of box* and I used only a little dab of filler on the sides of the nose. With careful dry-fitting, everything else went on perfectly. Paints are home mixes of Tamiya. The gray is medium sea gray with a touch of white, and the blue green is sky blue mixed with flat green, cockpit green and some kind of light gray. I used a premixed dark wash from Mig Products. I applied it with a tiny brush directly over the panels, over a semi-gloss finish. After letting it dry a few minutes, I gently wiped the excess with a q-tip (earbud). I typically don't do washes on small scale aircraft, but I like effect here. The aircraft modeled is from the 21st OSAD/120th Guards, stationed at Domma Airbase, east of Lake Baikal and north of the Mongolian border, in the late 1990s. I had a great deal of fun with this build. It took about two weeks worth of evenings (not contiguous) to finish. As I said, everything fit nicely, and the kit is smartly engineered. The only thing to watch out for might be the landing gear legs. They fit into little leg stubs which fit into the wheel wells. The assembly is a bit spindly, and should be allowed to dry thoroughly before placing the kit on its wheels. The final assembly is pretty sturdy, but you wont want to be doing hard landings on your workbench like you might with a Matchbox kit. The cockpit details are decals, which meh! But Im sure there are resin and PE upgrade sets available for those who want. Exhausts painted with Model Master Metalizer steel and exhaust colors. Taking its place *The only things not "OOB" are an extra set of R-73 missiles I plundered from a Trumpeter MiG-31. I made a hash of the R-60 weapons provided in the kit Edited May 1, 2017 by RKic
