djenkins72968
This is the new DeAgostini Build R2-D2 subscription, similar to the Build the Millennium Falcon from the same company. I was thinking about not posting it at all because there's really not much to it. You get some parts each month, and you screw or glue them together, and that's about it. There's not much room for customization unless you want to weather it, which I may do later on down the road. The parts are really well made, and everything is nicely laid out. The only real complaint I have is that there are a lot of screws of different sizes, and the build manuals don't tell you clearly which ones to use. Thankfully, lots of people have done this before me, so there are many places to find that info out online. This was the first shipment...weeks 1-4. Each magazine has some history on droids and other related stuff, and then a page or two of instructions on how to put together that weeks set of parts. In the end, this droid will be around half scale of the real thing. It will stand around 19 inches tall and weigh around 18 pounds. It will have "advanced electronics", and it will be able to run in autonomous mode, or be controlled by a smart phone app. It will also respond to voice commands. The projector near the eye will work, and it will project little movies of Luke or Leia onto flat surfaces. There will be a video camera that sits behind the eye lens that will be able to take videos or stills, and that you will be able to see on the smart phone app. In the end, it will take around 2 years to get all of the parts at 4 issues per month. I hope I have the patience to wait Ill post week by week. I am up to issue 8 right now, and issues 9-12 should be coming sometime in the next couple of weeks. djenkins72968
Week 1: This is the screwdriver you get and the parts needed to build the diagnostics sensor. And the sensor done. Not much to it :)
djenkins72968
Week 2: Starting R2's right leg. All of the silver parts are cast metal. The casting is really nicely done. Most of these parts are screwed together, but a couple needed to be super glued.
djenkins72968
Week 3: Adding more to the right leg, and test fitting the eye pieces. The little circuit board is a test board that will be used to test all the various electronics that will be coming in future issues.
djenkins72968
Week 4: More right leg parts, and the battery box that will be used for powering the electronics. Again, the silver round piece is a nicely cast metal piece. A lot of the parts for the leg are just test fitted at this point. Unfortunately, I wont be able to attach them permanently until much later in the build because of all the other pieces that will go into the leg.

djenkins72968
Week 5: Starting on the frame for the head. This will take many weeks to complete. The head is constructed with black plastic parts and metal parts. The first part is the very top of the head with a bearing held in place with a metal bracket.
djenkins72968
Week 6: Logic Display
djenkins72968
Week 7: More of the head frame and feet lubricators
djenkins72968
Week 8: Even more of the head frame and finishing the foot lubricators This metal frame will go under the black plastic parts of the head frame. That will complete the first "layer" of the plastic framing. Following that are two more "layers" to make up the full head frame That's it for now. Hopefully this is of some interest to other people! :D It will probably be a couple more weeks before I get any new parts.
