C-130H with 8 blade props

Recommended Posts

So I was doing some searching of photos of the Wyoming ANG and came across this shot of one of their C-130H3s with DP 2000 8-blade props. After some research the AF was testing it to see if it would work. Never see this since, so it must have been abandoned.

A little research seems to show there is only 1 LC-130 with 8 bladed props: 83-0492. It first visited New Zealand for Operation Deep Freeze in 2008.Originally 12 were planned, I don't know if this happened. According to the excellent mrcaviation blog, it was a bit of a hanger queen this year (when I saw it the engines were being worked on).

Here is some info and a couple of pics (please don't steal them)

This one includes a flying pic:

These props are standard on the J models, interesting to see them on a H model.

The J's Have 6 bladed props, not 8. The props have a similar, but distinctly different shape. The prop hubs/spinners are also very different, the 6-bladed being much more tapered, the 8 being almost hemispherical.

These are the NP-2000 props initially designed for the E-2/C-2.  The first testbed for the NP-2000's on a C-130 was a private one from Snow Aviation.  Snow was a contractor in Columbus, Ohio responsible for refurbishing old military C-130's for either return to service or further sale.  They went belly up, but before they did, they were the initial testers of the props on one of the Herks they owned (a former WC-130E) with the civilian registration N307SA.

As far as I know, the original props were put back on before Snow went bankrupt, but N207SA is still an "experimental" aircraft which made further sale difficult, and it was passed on to AirNet which was a cargo company also based at Rickenbacker Field.  AirNet also went into receivership, and it looks like it is owned by the creditors and still sitting out on the ramp at Rickenbacker.
